Penn State Issues Reminder For Election Day Asynchronous Instruction

It’s time to vote, Penn State!

As Election Day dawns, Penn State reminded its faculty and professors of the Faculty Senate’s 2023 revision to Student Policy 42-47, which encourages instructors to offer remote, asynchronous classes on Election Day. The policy aims to support students and faculty participation in elections as voters or poll workers who are unable to attend in-person classes.

In part to the guidance given by the senate, instructors should avoid scheduling exams or high-stakes assignments. Instead, the senate suggested offering flexible, asynchronous assignments that are easily accessible remotely on Canvas. Exceptions to the policy are for courses that meet only once a week, such as labs or clinicals.

Instructors were encouraged to communicate asynchronous Election Day instructions in advance. Faculty were reminded to keep in mind students may have varying internet access, so providing a 24- to 48-hour window for completing assignments.

Faculty were also advised to take advantage of Canvas tools to streamline grading, such as “complete/incomplete” grading options. By adapting course content, instructors could facilitate meaningful engagement on Election Day while ensuring students have proper access to vote.
