No Refund Theatre Presents: ‘Bull In A China Shop’

This week, No Refund Theatre is presenting Bryna Turner’s play “Bull in a China Shop,” a drama set in the early 20th century, centering around feminist revolutionaries Mary Woolley and Jeannette Marks.

The play was inspired by letters sent between the two over the course of around 30 years and followed all of the ups and downs of their relationship.

“Bull in a China Shop” tackles feminist issues and the problems that come along with being at the center of a revolution, things that seem all too applicable to today’s day and age, despite being set over a century ago.

“Regardless of what happens, one way or another, the show is going to mean something different,” Director Caden Barley said.

Despite this play being chosen way back in the spring semester, it seemed perfectly fitting that it landed during election week.

The play has a small cast of only five actors. Through powerful monologues and dialogue scenes, the story moves gracefully along, bringing you deeper into their relationship. The audience gets a feeling of what it’s like to be a revolutionary and the toll it can take on their lives.

The lead actors, Sophie H-M and Kasia Barry, said they had a great attraction to the play from the start. Sophie, who played Mary Whooley, said she was incredibly excited to work in the play from the beginning.

“Very rarely do I get to do a play that I not only care about so much, but I feel like the audience doesn’t know,” H-M said.

“Bull in a China Shop” takes place from Thursday, November 7, to Saturday, November 9, in Forum 111. The Thursday show will start at 9 p.m., while the Friday and Saturday shows will begin at 8 p.m.
