Brainstorming Penn State Things That Should Be Played In IMAX Theaters
At this year’s White Out, there was a lot to be excited about — a win that moved the Nittany Lions up to No. 4 in the College Football Playoff rankings, freshmen’s first and senior’s last White Out, and it was an 8 p.m. game.
On top of all that excitement, the game was shown on the big screen across the country for the first time, allowing alumni to watch the game and show their support in the comfort of their local IMAX theater.
If you can’t make the game in person, nothing sounds better than getting together with friends, grabbing some popcorn and candy, and watching the game on a 72-foot screen while laid back in a comfy recliner.
With this, we brainstormed what other Penn State-related things should be shown in IMAX theaters and enjoyed on massive screens in a relaxing setting.
THON Final Four
Every year, THON’s “Final Four” hours bring heavy emotions and a sense of community as the 46-hour dance marathon comes to a close. From hearing from THON and Four Diamonds families to watching compilations of bereaved THON children, those last few hours showcase what THON’s mission is really about: the kids. Following family hour, the BJC starts booming as the dancers, crowd, and volunteers dance the last hour away.
Watching those special moments live on huge screens, as thousands of students cheer during the final countdown, would not only allow parents and alumni to see it for themselves but further spread THON’s mission. The crowd, total reveal, and immense energy would seep through this screen, making it an unforgettable IMAX experience.
Time Lapse Of Old Main Throughout The Year
Penn State’s campus changes every season, and Old Main is at the heart of it all. Imagine a year-long time-lapse of Old Main in IMAX and seeing the fall foliage shift to snowy winter nights and then eventually to Old Main during golden hour in the summer. The beauty and tranquility of Penn State would shine in cinematic glory. Besides, who doesn’t wanna hear the Old Main bells blast from massive speakers?
Behind The Scenes Of The Creamery
Ever wonder how your favorite Berkey Creamery flavors go from cow to cone? A behind-the-scenes documentary shown in IMAX would let you dive into the Creamery’s production process and how Penn State makes its award-winning ice cream. For anyone who’s ever waited in that line on a hot day, seeing the Creamery in IMAX would be as sweet as a scoop of Peachy Paterno.
Compilation Of Blue Band Halftime Shows
The Penn State Blue Band’s halftime performances are always iconic. In the past two seasons, we’ve had the pleasure of seeing performances of Taylor Swift and ABBA, to name a few, played on the field. IMAX would be the perfect way to relive those shows and get up close and personal with every snare hit and cymbal clash.
A Documentary About The Life Of The Willard Preacher
Anyone who’s spent time inside of Willard or has passed it on the way to class has likely encountered the Willard Preacher. With IMAX, you could experience a documentary of how little Gary grew up to become the Willard Preacher we all know and avoid love today. A documentary could maybe even explain why he always wears that red hoodie or why he only preaches at Willard.
All 409 Joe Paterno Wins
Joe Paterno’s wins make up some of the most memorable and legendary moments in college football history. An IMAX compilation of Paterno’s greatest victories, including close calls and blowouts, would bring the nostalgia and thrill of those games right back. For die-hard fans, this would be like reliving a piece of Penn State history. In terms of running time, it would be like having a Harry Potter movie marathon.
Penn State Football & Hoops Highlights
From three-pointers in the Bryce Jordan Center to touchdowns in Beaver Stadium, Penn State sports are packed with unforgettable moments. An IMAX highlight reel of football and men’s and women’s basketball’s best plays would be a dream come true for some fans. Watching jaw-dropping plays on a huge screen, surrounded by fans, would make each dunk, pass, and run that much more thrilling.
Centre Film Festival Films
The Centre Film Festival has become a beloved tradition in State College over the past six years, highlighting films from the local community, students, and international filmmakers alike. Bringing these films to IMAX would celebrate Penn State and the greater Centre County region, showcasing everything from documentary shorts to Academy Award-qualifying feature films with the power of IMAX.
