Alyssa Naeher Announces Retirement From International Soccer

Former Penn State women’s soccer goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher announced Monday afternoon she will retire from international soccer.

Naeher has been a member of the United States women’s national team since 2014 and most recently won gold in the 2024 Summer Olympics. Following her performance in Paris, she was nominated for the 2024 Women’s Ballon d’Or.

The 36-year-old competes in the NWSL for the Chicago Red Stars, where she recently became the league’s first goalie to reach 50 wins for a single club.

A Nittany Lion from 2006-09, Naeher went 50-19-5 as a starter with 24 shutouts, becoming a First Team All-American in 2007 and 2008, as well as being named the 2007 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year.

With the national team competing in two international friendlies during this window, Naeher will play in her last two games against England on Saturday, November 30, and the Netherlands on Tuesday, December 3.
