As Beau Pribula Moves On, Drew Allar Focuses On SMU

Drew Allar didn’t want to talk much about Beau Pribula. He didn’t want to talk that much about himself, either.

Despite that both of Penn State football’s quarterbacks each made one of the biggest announcements of their careers on Sunday night and Monday morning, respectively, Allar wanted to talk about SMU.

Pribula announced Sunday that he was done. He was leaving Penn State after three years as a third- and second-string quarterback and entering the portal.

Allar announced Monday he was staying at Penn State, ready for more. Even before he had the chance to boost any potential NFL Draft stock in the College Football Playoff, Allar decided the best thing for his football career was to play one last year with the Nittany Lions.

“For me, personally, it was a football decision, and that’s how I always have been operating,” Allar said. “Me and my family had extensive talks about it and everything, weighed everything. Personally, I came to the conclusion myself that I felt like it was best for my future and that sort of thing. But honestly, I’m glad I got this out of the way because I’m totally focused on SMU. Respectfully, this is the last time I really want to talk about it.”

When asked about Pribula’s move, Allar was positive about his now-former teammate and said he understood the decision to leave Penn State just before the playoffs. With Pribula gone, though, Allar will have to adjust.

Allar confirmed that Ethan Grunkemeyer will serve as Penn State’s No. 2 option at quarterback with Pribula gone, taking the step ahead of Jaxon Smolik. However, Allar said Grunkemeyer’s move will be the only physical difference in Holuba Hall this week in preparation.

“In terms of preparing, I think it’s similar to what we preach as a quarterback. No matter what, preparing as a starter, and I don’t know how much that really changes for all of us just because we’ve been preparing that way for 14 weeks now,” Allar said. “So I think we’re going to keep that same mindset about ourselves in terms of, I think that’s really the only thing that’s going to be a little bit different.”

With Pribula gone, Allar’s role became even more important — even though he was already the starting quarterback. Should Allar go down before the final whistle against Purdue, a true freshman quarterback who hasn’t taken a college snap would get reps in the shotgun for the Nittany Lions.

However, Allar didn’t seem too concerned with Grunkemeyer’s readiness. The two have a strong bond — they were both coached as Ohio-native quarterbacks by Brad Maendler, who boosted both of them to national profiles in high school. That coaching, Allar said, has prepared Grunkemeyer to be ready to step up if needed.

“I think Grunk’s done a really good job all year, he’s preparing really well, and he always has been. And I think he’s at the point now where he knows what it takes to prepare week in and week out, and I think his routine and process is very consistent,” Allar said about Grunkemeyer. “That’s how he’s wired, kind of similar to me, obviously same quarterback coach in terms of Brad.”

Despite all the chaos happening around the quarterback room, Allar was wired in on SMU. Regardless of who’s taking snaps behind him or who he’s throwing to, Allar just wants to play the Mustangs.

“I’m totally focused on SMU, just because they’re really talented team,” Allar said. “Obviously, they earned the right to be in the playoffs, just as we have, and they’re a really good team. So I just look forward to the opportunity that we have ahead of us playing in Beaver again this Saturday.”
