Saquon Barkley Unlikely To Go For NFL Rushing Record Against Giants
Former Penn State football running back Saquon Barkley is unlikely to go for the NFL single-season rushing record in the Philadelphia Eagles’ game against the New York Giants on Sunday afternoon, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni said Wednesday.
Sirianna did not outright say that Barkley wouldn’t chase the record but noted that Barkley will “probably be somebody that rests” with other Eagles starters.
Barkley totaled 2,005 rushing yards in 17 regular season games, needing 101 yards against the Giants to surpass former Los Angeles Rams running back Eric Dickerson’s record of 2,105 set in 1984. Had Barkley broken the record on Sunday, he would’ve done so against the team that drafted him No. 2 overall in 2018.
After the Eagles’ win over the Dallas Cowboys last Sunday, Barkley said he was interested in chasing the record but noted that he understood any philosophy of resting him before the playoffs.
“I came here to do something special, and obviously breaking the record is special,” Barkley said. “But I want a banner up there. I think we all do. But we gave ourselves a chance with that and clinched the playoffs before and now with the division.”
Barkley is set to return in the Wild Card round of the NFL Playoff, though Philadelphia’s opponent is yet to be determined.
