‘Love Story’: Relating Love Songs To Penn State

Ah, Valentine’s Day.

It’s that time of year again when couples celebrate their love for one another, and the single folks out there rot and suffer alone. Either way, single or taken, love songs are blasted everywhere, whether they get you in your feels or make you think about your loved one.

Given that every song has endless meanings with different stories behind them, we decided to connect some popular love songs to the Penn State experience.

‘Hey There Delilah’

Hey there Delilah, what’s it like in New York City? (What’s it like in Happy Valley?)
I’m a thousand miles away, but girl, tonight you look so pretty (We’re in the middle of nowhere at a big school, but you stand out)
Yes you do
Times Square can’t shine as bright as you, I swear it’s true (Old Main can’t shine as bright as you)

Hey there Delilah, don’t you worry about the distance (“Long distance will definitely work out“)
I’m right there if you get lonely give this song another listen (Listen to Onward State’s Valentine’s playlist if you get lonely)
Close your eyes
Listen to my voice, it’s my disguise, I’m by your side (Listen to the lion roar during a game and think of me)

Oh, it’s what you do to me
Oh, it’s what you do to me

‘When I Was Your Man’

That I should’ve bought you flowers (Creamery ice cream)
And held your hand (And walked Old Main hand in hand)
Shoulda gave you all my hours (Saved you seats in the student section)
When I had the chance
Take you to every party (tailgate)
‘Cause all you wanted to do was dance (chant)
Now my baby’s dancin’ (Now my baby’s cheering)
But she’s dancin’ with another man (But she’s cheering for Michigan…)

‘Love Story’

We were both young (freshmen) when I first saw you
I close my eyes and the flashback starts, I’m standin’ there (to when we went to the Den)
On a balcony in summer air (on the back patio in summer air)
See the lights, see the party, the ball gowns (See the Phyrst, see the line around Doggie’s)
See you make your way through the crowd (through the LineLeap line queue)
And say, “Hello” (“We Are”)
Little did I know
That you were Romeo, you were throwin’ pebbles (That you were decked out, head to toe in white)
And my daddy said, “Stay away from Juliet” (Screamin’ ‘Let’s Go State’ on a Saturday night)
And I was cryin’ on the staircase (And I was cryin’ in the stacks)
Beggin’ you, “Please don’t go” (Beggin’ football to “please don’t lose“)

‘Casual’

But we’re knee-deep in the passenger seat and you’re eating me out (Knee-deep in the back of the Whoop)
Is it casual now? (Are we?)
Two weeks and your mom invites me to her house in Long Beach (Your mom invites me to your family’s tailgate)
Is it casual now? (We are?)
I know what you tell your friends (I know what you tell your frat bros)
It’s casual, if it’s casual now
Then baby, get me off again (Get me off the Whoop again)
If it’s casual, it’s casual now

Dumb love, I love being stupid ( I need Lion Tutors)
Dream of us in a year (Dream of us in Happy Valley)
Maybe we’d have an apartment (Penn Towers)
And you’d show me off to your friends at the pier (You’d show me off to your frat bros at Pmans)

‘Iris’

And I’d give up forever to touch you (And I’d give up forever for a national championship)
‘Cause I know that you feel me somehow (‘Cause I know that it’d heal me somehow)
You’re the closest to Heaven that I’ll ever be (Beaver Stadium is the closest to Heaven that I’ll ever be)
And I don’t wanna go home right now (And I don’t wanna go 10-2 again)
And all I can taste is this moment (All I can taste is my chicken basket)
And all I can breathe is your life (And all I can breathe is smell of beer)
And sooner or later, it’s over (And sooner or later, I’m a senior)
I just don’t wanna miss you tonight (I just don’t wanna miss my last chance)

’28’

You took a train to the south side of Boston (You took the White Loop to East Halls)
You showed me where your old man stayed (You showed me where you lived freshman year)
Took 28 years of blood I was lost in (Took four years of Pollock Testing Center)
To feel loved on my own birthday (To take a blowjob shot at the Phyrst on my 21st)
And I always felt like I’s in between somethin’ (I go to school in the middle of nowhere)
Like home and somewhere far away (Like outside of Philly)
But tonight on the west side in a bar out in Brooklyn (Tonight at Cafe 210 West)
I saw tears outline your face (I cried at my last White Out)

How lucky are we? (How lucky WE ARE)
It’s been a hell of a week, but you’re all grown now (It’s the finals week before graduation)
There’s smoke seepin’ out of your bloody teeth (You were smoking at Lions Deliver)
But you’re home somehow (You’re in Happy Valley)

And I’ll be upstairs with the guitar I’s given (I’ll be in the HUB with the piano playing loudly in the background)
When I was barely 14 (When you were a freshman)
When did McGlinchey’s get so crowded? (When did The Den get crowded?)
And why are the crowds so damn green? (Why is the crowd so damn blue and white?)
I lost my mind on the streets of the city (I blacked out in downtown State College)
And maybe I lost all hope too (I can only afford Canyon Pizza)

‘Thinking Out Loud’

And darling I will be loving you ’til we’re 70 (I will love you even when I hit alumni status)
And baby my heart could still fall as hard at 23
And I’m thinking ’bout how people fall in love in mysterious ways (People fall in love in frat basements and at tailgates)
Maybe just the touch of a hand (Maybe we can be beer pong partners)
Oh me I fall in love with you every single day (I feel like we’re the only two people at a big school with thousands of students)
And I just wanna tell you I am

So honey now, take me into your loving arms (Snuggle with me in your elevated twin bed in your dorm)
Kiss me under the light of a thousand stars (Kiss me at dusk in the Arboretum)
Place your head on my beating heart (Once again while in your elevated twin bed)
I’m thinking out loud, maybe we found love right where we are (Maybe we found love in Happy Valley)

‘You Are In Love’

One look, dark room (In the basement of a frat)
Meant just for you (He just did this to another girl)
Time moved too fast (It’s almost closing time you need to go home)
You play it back (You will not remember this in the morning)
Buttons on a coat (Buttons on his button-down that he has open for no good reason)
Light-hearted joke (He’s not funny)
No proof, not much (You will have no proof of this interaction)
But you saw enough (You caught a glimpse of his Snapchat)
Small talk, he drives (He says maybe three words to you)
Coffee at midnight (Shotski upstairs)
The light reflects (The DJ lights are strobing blue and white)
The chain on your neck (No notes here. This one is spot on)
He says, “Look up” (He says, “DO YOU KNOW THIS SONG?”)
And your shoulders brush (Was it intentional or did he just bump into you?)
No proof, one touch (Did it seriously happen like you remember it?)
But you felt enough (You’ve felt enough to send you into a delusional spiral for the next week)
