Arsenii Sergeev Named Big Ten Men’s Hockey First Star Of The Week Honor

No. 15 Penn State’s junior goaltender Arsenii Sergeev has secured the Big Ten First Star of the Week, making it the fifth straight week a Nittany Lion has taken home a weekly award.

Sergeev had memorable performances against No. 1 Michigan State on February 21 and 22, stopping 78 of 82 total shots, which was good enough for an impressive .951 save percentage. The Nittany Lions left East Lansing with five out of a possible six points after winning both games over the weekend.

Since returning from his injury in early January, Sergeev is 10-2-4 with a .925 save percentage which has helped Penn State win six straight games and put the Nittany Lions in contention for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Sergeev’s 10 wins lead the Big Ten and third in the nations over that period while his save percentage is second highest in the conference during the current stretch.

Overall, Sergeev is 14-6-4 with a .920 save percentage which marks the sixth-most in single-season victories and second-best in save percentage in program history.

Since the New Year, Penn State has had seven weekly honorees and 10 overall. Sergeev’s award marks his third on the season after being named First Star on January 7 and February 11, which is the most all-time for a Nittany Lion in a single season. Teammates Simon Mack, Reese Laubach, and Aiden Fink have also been multiple-time honorees this season.

Penn State will be back in Pegula Ice Arena for its regular season finale this weekend against No. 2 Minnesota at 8:30 p.m. on Friday and 8 p.m. on Saturday. Both games will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
