Bring On The Beads: An Open Letter To Celebrate Mardi Gras In State College

Who says the fun has to end after State Patty’s?

Although one of the biggest weekends of the year takes place before the week of Mardi Gras, this year, both State Patty’s and Mardi Gras fall within the same week.

While you might say to yourself, “I can’t celebrate on a random Tuesday,” this couldn’t be further from the truth. Not only is Mardi Gras, sometimes referred to as Fat Tuesday, a time to grab your beer and colorful beads, but it’s a day full of celebration.

Originally started in medieval Europe, Mardi Gras is a day to indulge and celebrate before Ash Wednesday and Lent begins. One of the most infamous parts of Fat Tuesday involves putting a tiny plastic baby in a cake, and whoever gets the baby will be filled with luck and prosperity. If a promise of luck and cake doesn’t get you excited, then maybe the floats and music will.

I’m not saying that State College should have floats pass through Allen Street on a Tuesday night, but I do think Penn State students will find any reason to dress up and drink. Whether it’s in the holiday’s colors of purple, green, and yellow or a full-blown medieval costume, it only seems right that Penn Staters get in on the action.

While Chumley’s downtown is hosting a Mardi Gras party, it needs to spread to other bars downtown. Whether it’s Doggies giving away discounted beer or Champs defrosting DJ Yemi two days early to bring a bit of Louisiana to Pennsylvania, there’s definitely some excitement to the holiday that’s being overlooked by the people of State College.

So, tomorrow, put on your colorful shirts and rally your friends for one last extravaganza before we all leave for spring break.
