Report: Penn State Hoops Declines Postseason Opportunities & Ends Season

Penn State men’s basketball declined consideration for any postseason tournament ahead of Selection Sunday, per Lions247.

The team stopped practicing following their regular season finale in Madison, where they upset then-No. 12 Wisconsin, 86-75.

If it had elected to continue its season, Penn State likely would’ve been selected to either the new College Basketball Crown or NIT. Several other power conference teams have made a similar decision in recent days, including Big Ten foes Rutgers and Iowa.

The shifting landscape of collegiate athletics may have been a motivator, as Mike Rhoades will be tasked with immediately shaping the roster for the 2025-26 season. The transfer portal opens on March 24, while the proposed secondary tournaments run through early April.

A vast majority of Penn State’s rotation, including three of its starters and two top reserves, are out of eligibility. They will be ending their collegiate careers on a high note with the upset over Wisconsin.

The Nittany Lions will finish the 2024-25 season with a record of 16-15 and 6-14 in Big Ten play. After a 12-2 start, injuries began to pile up as the schedule got harder, snowballing into several long losing streaks that took them out of consideration for both the Big Ten and NCAA tournaments.
