Your Class Is An Hour Long, You’ll See Each Other Again: An Open Letter To Stop Holding Hands On Campus

Look, I love relationships. I just don’t understand why I have to watch you death grip your boyfriend or girlfriend as I’m dodging around you on the way to class.

Now, I’m not telling you to never hold hands, but do it with the awareness that you’re still on campus and people are judging.

It’s not the fact that you’re showing you love your partner, but it gives the same energy as that one couple in high school that walk to every class together and kiss in the doorway for all to see, including your teacher.

If it’s downtown, then that’s completely different. Downtown is, of course, a more casual environment, and most of the time, it’s students headed somewhere to relax or grab a drink with friends. On campus, though, is an entirely different situation. You have students like myself who haven’t worked out in a few months, breaking a sweat to get around you two while you stroll down the sidewalk as if you’re walking down some romantic pathway in a resort in Mexico.

There’s also just a practical aspect to not holding hands on campus. Let’s say, hypothetically, you’re crossing the street when all of a sudden, someone on a scooter or bike comes barreling towards you. You’re a slow walker and try to keep up with your partner but end up slowing them down. Now what?

Now, both of you have been hit and you possibly injured the other person, all because you couldn’t give up holding hands on campus. It then gets to the point where not holding hands can end up saving your life.

Sure, this is a stretch and you might be thinking, “This girl’s nuts,” but if you’re someone who likes holding hands on campus, then I encourage you to ask your friends their real thoughts on people who hold hands on the way to class. The only real exception to this rule are the professors who are over 50 years old and have their spouses visiting them on campus.

So, look, I’m not saying anyone is hating on your relationship or that I want you guys to break up. I’m just simply asking for you to consider others and maybe not hold hands if you’re going to walk at a snail’s pace.
