[Photo Story] Penn State Wrestling Clinches 13th National Title

Death, taxes, and a Penn State wrestling team title.

This past weekend, Penn State wrestling clinched its 13th national title, to no one’s surprise. For the first time in program history, all 10 wrestlers secured a spot as an All-American, including two individual titles. The team also broke its own NCAA Championships scoring record they set the season prior.

Let’s take a look at how the championship came to be.

Fans didn’t waste any time selling out the Wells Fargo Center on Thursday morning for the first of six weekend sessions.

Penn State started the weekend off strong with all 10 wrestlers winning their first and second matches.

Former Penn State wrestlers David Taylor and Terrell Barraclough coached and competed, respectively, for their new schools. Taylor’s Cowboys finished with the third-highest team score and Barraclough placed fifth, earning him a spot as an All-American.

Early Friday afternoon, seven Penn State wrestlers advanced to the semifinals. One match separated them from a chance to wrestle in the finals Saturday night.

Mitchell Mesenbrink, Carter Starocci, and Josh Barr clinched spots in the finals after Friday night victories in the semifinals.

Early Saturday afternoon, Penn State clinched its 13th team title in program history. Seven wrestlers competed and all earned All-American honors in the early session.

The moment we had all been waiting for — Saturday night.

The 184-pound final kicked off when Starocci captured his fifth NCAA championship against Northern Iowa’s Parker Keckeisen in a 4-3 decision.

Mesenbrink secured his first NCAA title in his collegiate career with an 8-2 decision over Mikey Caliendo of Iowa in the 165-pound final. This was Mesenbrink’s third victory against Caliendo this season.

Josh Barr fell in the 197-pound final to Stephen Buchanan of Iowa. The redshirt freshman came up just short of his first NCAA championship in a 5-2 decision.

The team, once again, celebrated its team title after the conclusion of the championship matches.
