Report: Penn State Wrestler Zack Ryder Enters Transfer Portal

Penn State wrestler Zack Ryder has entered the transfer portal, according to Justin Basch. Ryder has four years of eligibility left.

Ryder was a freshman for Penn State at 184 pounds this year and was expected to step in for senior Carter Starroci next season. Ryder had an impressive redshirt season with an 8-0 record and some notable wins against NCAA qualifiers.

Ryder’s announcement comes after Penn State’s significant roster addition of former Ohio State All-American wrestler Rocco Welsh. Welsh finished as the 2024 NCAA runner-up at 174 pounds, however, Welsh is expected to compete for Penn State at 184 pounds. This would have put Ryder and Welsh in competition for the starting position.

As the transfer portal period unfolds, the Penn State wrestling team has already seen some significant changes, including the loss of wrestlers Alex Facundo and Gary Steen.
