Penn State Provost Offers Support For International Students

Penn State’s interim Executive Vice President and Provost, Tracy Langkilde, offered her support to the university’s international students experiencing the termination of immigration records and loss of F1 visas, in a statement released Tuesday. The university is providing “individualized support” for every Penn State student impacted by the actions of the Department of Homeland Security.
With more than 11,500 international faculty, staff, and students, Langkilde said the termination is impacting Penn State students who come from across the world, causing immense anxiety and stress for these individuals, as well as the community.
“As someone who came to the United States on a postdoc visa, I personally understand the value of an international experience and how uncertain this time can feel,” Langkilde said in a release. “Please know, our commitment to our international community and appreciation for their important contributions made at Penn State have not faltered.”
Penn State administration is partnering with two higher education membership organizations, the Association of American Universities and the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities, to better understand the latest legal developments.
According to Langkilde, Penn State Global has been reaching out directly to impacted individuals, giving them “tailored care” to discuss their situation and provide them with appropriate resources, such as legal support, academic support, and counseling. Penn State Global has many resources available, including a reference guide for information on interacting with federal law enforcement authorities, as well as travel guidance for noncitizens.
Langkilde also noted that, contrary to rumors, Penn State is not aware of federal law enforcement activity on its campuses.
Langkilde asked that the community refrain from providing advice to these individuals and encouraged it to direct students and colleagues to the information and FAQs available under the university’s Community Updates page under International students/immigration-related guidance. She also encourages impacted individuals to contact International Student and Scholar Advising at 814-865-7681 for more specific support.
