Kappa Sigma Fraternity Returns To Penn State

The Kappa Sigma fraternity has returned to Penn State after a nearly four-year suspension for multiple violations of university policy, its president confirmed to Onward State. The fraternity announced a 101-person pledge class in April.

Kappa Sigma’s president, Sawyer Garcia, said he transferred to Penn State’s University Park campus from the Behrend campus with the intention of getting Kappa Sigma up and running. After a year of planning, Garcia put together his pledge class, and he expects to finish the year with around 115 brothers.

The fraternity used to have a house on 420 E. Prospect Ave., but Garcia said getting the house back will be a long process.

“We know that earning a house is a privilege that comes after establishing a stable and active chapter,” he said. “Next semester, after our chapter has been officially installed by headquarters, we plan to work closely with alumni and university housing to explore any and all viable options.”

Kappa Sigma has officially been recognized by Penn State, Garcia said, though it doesn’t yet appear on the university’s list of fraternities. However, Garcia said once Kappa Sigma finds its feet, it will operate as it used to.

“We’re very aware of the history of the previous Kappa Sigma chapter here, and we’re committed to building something entirely different,” he said. “This new group is founded on brotherhood and respect, not harmful traditions. Expect to see us operating on and off campus like any other fraternity in the next school year.”
