Report: Penn State Hoops To Host Boston University And Harvard In Multi-Team Event In November

A pair of New England schools will be making the trip to Happy Valley this fall.

Rocco Miller reported on Wednesday that Penn State hoops will host both Boston University and Harvard as part of a multi-team event (MTE) during their non-conference schedule, with dates to be determined. Additionally, as part of the MTE, Harvard and Boston University will face each other in a neutral-site game on November 22.

A multi-team event allows a team to exceed the 29-game regular season that is the NCAA basketball standard. While Penn State played in a three-game MTE last season at the Sunshine Slam in Daytona Beach, they’ll elect to add two home games to the schedule instead of doing a neutral-site tournament, a potential reaction to their historic trip to New Haven in November.

Boston University, out of the Patriot League, finished the 2024-25 season at 16-16 (10-8 Patriot League), ending in the conference tournament’s quarterfinals. In their lone game against a Big Ten foe last season, they lost 40-71 against UCLA. This will be the fourth time the two programs have ever played in basketball, with Boston University holding a 2-1 lead and winning the most recent matchup in January 1984.

Harvard, out of the Ivy League, finished the 2024-25 season at 12-15 (7-7 Ivy League), failing to qualify for their conference tournament. They faced two power conference opponents last season, losing to both the Big East’s St. John’s and the Big 12’s Colorado by double digits. This will be the third time the two programs have played, with the two teams splitting the prior meetings. Penn State won the most recent meeting in January 1976.

The MTE sets Penn State’s non-conference schedule to officially include 11 games. Of those, five are now known. Along with the MTE, Penn State hoops is set to host Fairfield for their home opener on Wednesday, November 3, visit New Haven on Saturday, November 8, and play a neutral-site game at the Hall of Fame Showcase on Monday, November 22 against Providence.
