Penn State Finishes No. 16 In Learfield Directors’ Cup Standings

Penn State athletics continues to impress.

After coming in at third in the standings following the fall season, Penn State athletics finished 16th in the Learfield Directors’ Cup standings for the 2024-25 sports year. The Directors’ Cup compares the performance of Division I athletic programs across all sports.

After tallying 335 points in the fall season, Penn State collected 558 points in the winter and spring season to finish with a total of 893 points. It finished fifth among Big Ten schools behind USC, UCLA, Ohio State, and Michigan. A total of 19 Division I sports can be counted in each school’s final total, four of which must be baseball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, and women’s volleyball.

The highest-scoring team for the Nittany Lions this winter season was wrestling, which earned 100 points after winning its 12th national title in the past 14 years. Men’s hockey received 83 points after making it to the Frozen Four for the first time in program history, while men’s gymnastics added 73, fencing added 72, women’s gymnastics added 45.5, women’s hockey added 25, and men’s indoor track & field contributed 16.5.

In the spring season, Penn State’s highest-scoring team was the men’s lacrosse team, which collected 83 points after advancing to the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament. Men’s volleyball earned 60 points on its way to advancing to the national quarterfinals.

The Nittany Lions have now finished in the top 15 of the Learfield Directors’ Cup 20 times in the last 31 years. Penn State placed No. 23 in last year’s cup standings. Texas won first place in this year’s Directors’ Cup with 1,255.25 points, followed by USC and Stanford.
