OS Reviews: Benny Leone’s

There’s another pizza place in State College, folks. Benny Leone’s opened downtown at 109 S. Fraser St. earlier this summer, taking over the old spot of K2 Roots.
The New York-style joint is known for its outrageously large pizzas, with each pie coming in at 28 inches and a single slice being 14. Our staffers made the trip downtown to give our thoughts on the giant slices.
Michael Siroty: Pepperoni Slice With Buffalo Sauce

I’m from New Jersey. I don’t screw around when it comes to pizza. Was this the best pizza I’ve ever had? No. Will I be back? Absolutely. I got a classic pepperoni slice, but drizzled some buffalo sauce on top for some bites, and I was really happy with this spot. The slices are big and very crispy, which is exactly how I like it. The crust was the best part of this slice, and it was nearly perfect. Thank you, Benny Leone’s, for becoming the new top pizza place in town.
Jack Anderson-Jussen: Pepperoni Slice

After a night out on the town, I wandered into Benny Leone’s, and let me tell you, I’m glad I did. The vibe hits you right away: jars of sauce lining the walls, dough balls waiting to be tossed, and a counter setup that gives you a front-row seat to the pizza-making process.
I went for a classic pepperoni slice, and within minutes, a fresh pie came out of the oven and was cut up right in front of me. These slices are no joke, massive, thin-crust, and exactly the style I like. The flavor delivered too: crispy edges, plenty of cheese, and just enough grease to remind you you’re eating late-night pizza.
I’d give the slice an 8.2/10, but the overall experience? A perfect 10/10. At $6 a slice, it’s a solid deal compared to other State College spots. While I probably wouldn’t shell out for a full pie (they’re on the pricey side), I know I’ll be back when the craving for another giant slice hits.
Zoey Garrett: Pepperoni Slice

10/10. Delicious, best ratio of crust to pizza goodness. With that being said, I’m from Virginia, so what do I know?
Ashley Connington: Pepperoni Slice With Hot Honey

I’ve been a huge fan of pepperoni pizza with hot honey lately, so when I saw they had it here, I was so happy. The size lived up to the expectation too — one regular slice here is at least three, if not four, slices from a regular place.
I’m from New Jersey, so I like to think I know a few things about pizza, and this is my new favorite place in State College. The crust was thin and crispy, and it wasn’t overly greasy at all! It was a very solid slice of pizza, and for this big a slice for $6, I think it’s the best you can get downtown.
Maggie Alderisio: Plain Slice

After hearing that Benny Leone’s whole shtick is large pizzas, I expected the slice to be big, but nothing to write home about. However, after witnessing it with my own eyes, I can report that it was truly the biggest slice of pizza I’ve ever seen in my life. The picture does it no justice unless you really stop and think about the fact that it’s sitting on two dinner plate-sized paper plates. It was literally gigantic.
I’m extremely critical when it comes to pizza, and there aren’t many places in State College that I like when it comes to getting a pie. I was pleasantly surprised by my plain slice of cheese. The crust was thin and crispy, which is exactly how I like it, and it wasn’t very greasy. One critique is that they don’t have much variety in terms of slice options. Unless you want to get one of their two specialty pies and justify spending seven dollars on one slice of pizza. Spending five dollars like I did isn’t ideal, but they are so massive that one slice did fill me up. Overall, it was an averagely good cheese pizza, but if it hadn’t been so large, there wouldn’t have been much to separate it from any other pizza place downtown.
Cadyn Gill: Pepperoni Pizza
I ordered one pepperoni slice to share for $6, and I’d say it was definitely worth the price. The slice was huge and had a lot of pepperoni. I only waited about five minutes for my food, which was a pleasant surprise. I appreciate Benny Leone’s being open until 3 a.m. on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, because now, I have another option to go to when the DP Dough line is out the door. Was it mind-blowing? No. But it absolutely does the trick for an affordable late-night meal to send you off into a deep sleep after a long night out.
