Capturing Memories: Penn State Professor Michael Zeman Sharing Love Through Oil Paintings

If you’ve spotted a Penn State–themed oil painting on TikTok or while strolling through downtown State College, chances are it was created by Penn State alumnus and professor Michael Zeman.

Originally from Rochester, New York, Zeman first fell in love with Penn State as a high schooler attending a campus volleyball camp. He loved the university’s atmosphere and he went on to earn his undergraduate degree in kinesiology, followed by doctoral work in kinesiology and physiology.

Afterward, Zeman spent about seven years as a K–12 teacher and administrator before ultimately returning to State College. Now, Zeman serves as the director of experiential learning with Penn State Outreach and teaches Biology 141.

Zeman had always been artistic, but he didn’t pick up a paintbrush until 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic. He used painting as an escape from reality, to get back to something expressive.

Zeman first focused on landscapes, painting scenes of nature and cityscapes, but being immersed in Penn State’s culture, it wasn’t long before his work turned to the campus itself. He began capturing familiar moments that resonate with the Penn State community.

Having experienced Penn State as an undergraduate, graduate student, and now as a staff member, the Rochester, New York, native developed a deep appreciation for the highs and lows that come with university life.

He says watching new students arrive each year and seeing others graduate has given him a greater respect for all the moving parts that make Penn State what it is. Through his art, he hopes to capture moments that remind people of their own memories—whether with friends, family, or simply of times gone by.

“There’s something about the campus energy. Old Main in the rain, the stadium at sunset, unique scenes across campus that evoke a memory or emotion for Penn Staters, that inspires me to create and share art that feels local but also universal,” Zeman shared.

Zeman paints not only as a personal outlet, but also to spark comfort, joy, and conversation in others. He originally started his TikTok page as a way to reach his biology students and help them learn even while scrolling on their phones. Today, he also uses his account to share his progress and passion for art with thousands of Penn Staters.

“I hope my art adds something to the Penn State community, whether it sparks conversation, offers comfort, or just brightens someone’s day,” Zeman said.

Zeman never intended to sell his artwork, at least not at first, but once his home ran out of space to hold it all, he connected with the Douglas Albert Gallery. There, he began selling Christmas ornaments and, eventually, larger pieces of his work.

During Arts Fest weekend, he was even invited to paint outside the gallery live, creating a unique piece that blended Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night with Penn State’s iconic Nittany Lion Shrine.

“Ultimately, I see art as a way to keep learning, growing, and connecting with people, and I’m excited to keep sharing that journey,” Zeman said.
