Two Penn State Women’s Hockey Freshmen Earn AHA Weekly Honors

Two Penn State women’s hockey freshmen received major conference honors this week.

On Tuesday, Atlantic Hockey America named Matilde Fantin the Forward of the Week and Danica Maynard the Defenseman of the Week.

Fantin was a key offensive force in the Nittany Lions’ two-game sweep of Delaware, contributing five points across the weekend. The freshman picked up an assist in Friday’s 5-0 win, followed by a breakout performance on Saturday, with two goals and two assists. Fantin also fired a team-high 14 shots on goal during the series.

Maynard delivered an equally impactful performance on defense for the Nittany Lions. In Saturday’s dominant 7-0 victory, the rookie scored twice for her first collegiate goals and added two assists. The Canadian’s performance capped a four-point weekend, the highest among Nittany Lion defenders.

Maynard’s early-season success has her leading the team with nine total points, which ties her for fifth in the nation. Her efforts also earned her a spot in the record books as the first Penn State freshman to be named AHA Defenseman of the Week.

Penn State women’s hockey returns to the ice at Pegula Ice Arena against Mercyhurst for a two-game series. The series begins at 3 p.m. on Friday, October 17, with streaming available on BIG+.
