No. 6 Penn State Women’s Hockey Routs Lindenwood 5-0

No. 6 Penn State women’s hockey (10-0-0, 6-0-0 AHA) beat Lindenwood (1-9-0, 0-2-0 AHA) 5-0 to remain undefeated on Saturday afternoon.

Penn State was led by freshman goaltender Maddy Campbell, who got the shutout in the win at Pegula Ice Arena.

How It Happened

Lindenwood came out strong, controlling much of the offensive possession in the first couple of minutes and even got a breakaway, but Penn State goalie Campbell stood strong.

Lindenwood couldn’t keep the pressure on for long, and a hooking penalty sent the Nittany Lions on an early power play.

Despite nothing coming from the man-advantage, Penn State picked up some momentum. They got their best chance of the game around halfway through the first, when Mikah Keller got a breakaway opportunity. However, Lindenwood goalie Catherine Hodgins turned her away.

With just over six minutes left to play in the first period, Lindenwood turned the puck over in its defensive zone. Tessa Janecke capitalized on this chance by setting up Katelyn Roberts with a behind-the-back pass. Roberts made the most of the opportunity and ripped one past Hodgins, making it 1-0 Nitanny Lions.

Less than a minute after the goal, Penn State headed on the power play for the second time. Lindenwood’s penalty kill again looked strong, and they killed the penalty without much issue.

With under a minute left, Grace Outwater headed to the box after committing a hooking penalty in the defensive zone. Penn State had no problem clearing the puck before Lindenwood could get much started, and the power play was interrupted by the end of the first.

Coming out of the break, Penn State killed the rest of the Outwater penalty without allowing Lindenwood to sustain much offensive zone time.

After the kill, Penn State really started applying pressure on the defense. After a long offensive possession, Abby Stonehouse sniped one high, extending the Nittany Lion lead for her first goal of the year.

Penn State went on its third power play of the game after Nicole Hall was cross-checked in the neutral zone. The Nittany Lions were finally able to capitalize on the man-advantage after Roberts squeezed one through the crease for her second of the game.

Outwater looked to net the Nittany Lions’ fourth goal with a point-blank one-timed shot, but Hodgins made a great save. Penn State wouldn’t be denied for long. Matilde Fantin powered one by Hodgins.

Just 21 seconds later, the Nittany Lions would get their fifth. Kendall Butze would sneak one by Hodgins, making it a four-goal period for Penn State.

The offensive onslaught for Penn State could only be stopped by the end of the middle frame. During the intermission, Lindenwood would make a goalie change, and Madison Bowtell would take the net for the third period.

The final period was kicked off with four-on-four action after both teams committed penalties. No goals would come from the four-on-four chance on the ice.

Ten minutes into the third, Penn State would commit its second penalty of the game, as Maddy Christian was rung up for high-sticking.

Killing their second penalty proved to be no problem, and the Nittany Lions were back to even strength in no time. Penn State would get yet another power play chance, but would come up empty this time.

Time would eventually run out on Lindenwood before they could get on the board, ensuring Penn State’s fifth shutout on the season and another series sweep for the Nittany Lions.

Takeaways

  • Maddy Campbell was great again today, registering her second shutout in as many games for the blue and white.
