No. 6 Penn State Women’s Hockey Sweeps Robert Morris With 4-0 Shutout Victory

No. 6 Penn State women’s hockey (12-0-0, 8-0-0 AHA) dominated in wire-to-wire action on Saturday, defeating Robert Morris (5-7-0, 3-3-0 AHA) 4-0 to pull off another series sweep.

Maddy Christian scored a pair of goals in the first period and coasted from there. In an affair that saw multiple game misconducts and 19 penalties, Penn State notched its seventh shutout of the season.

How It Happened

Hunting a sixth consecutive series sweep, the Nittany Lions came out with a bang. Just over two minutes in, senior forward Maddy Christian skated to the front of the net and received a nice feed from Mikah Keller to put one past Robert Morris goaltender Lucy Phillips for her seventh goal of the year at 2:30 to jump out to a quick 1-0 lead.

The first penalty of the game would be taken by Penn State a few minutes later, as Tessa Janecke went off for slashing at 7:44. Robert Morris mustered a trio of shots on net towards Katie DeSa, but the Nittany Lions were able to kill it off.

Robert Morris’s Ashlyn Ham went off for hooking at 12:55, and in the dying seconds of its first power play of the day, Penn State doubled its lead. Christian buried her second goal of the game at 14:37, assisted by Leah Stecker and Sophie Morrow, on a rebound into a wide-open net, making it 2-0.

After one period, Penn State was dominant in all phases of the game, outshooting Robert Morris 17-7 and winning 15 out of 28 faceoffs.

After the final whistle of the first period, Grace Outwater got a cross-checking penalty, and a scrum ensued that also saw Katelyn Roberts and RMU’s Laura Eustace go off for dueling roughings. The second period started with a Colonials power play, but Penn State killed it off.

Play sped up for the next several minutes, with Penn State mainly controlling the puck. They got their second power play at 8:51 on a holding penalty by Shayne Desjardins and were absolutely relentless. After six saves by Phillips, Sophie Morrow buried an unassisted goal at 10:40, her second of the season, to make it 3-0.

At this point, the Nittany Lions smelled blood and re-entered the offensive zone on a 2-on-1, with Mya Vaslet’s shot on net landing on the stick of Nicole Hall, who buried her sixth goal of the season at 10:59 to make it 4-0. Two goals in 20 seconds.

Robert Morris got another power play at 13:51 on a McKenna Walsh trip, but it lasted just 36 seconds until an interference penalty on Emma Goding set up a 4-on-4 at 14:27. That would only last 17 seconds until Roberts took an interference penalty of her own at 14:44, giving Robert Morris a 4-on-3 power play. 17 seconds after that, Robert Morris got called for too many women on the ice at 15:01

For those keeping track at home, it led to a 3-on-3 for 50 seconds, a Penn State 4-on-3 for 36 seconds, a 4-on-4 for the next 17 seconds, and finally a Robert Morris power play for the final 17 seconds before all penalties elapsed at 17:01.

Heading into the third period, Penn State got another power play on an interference by Emma Goding at 1:05, but Phillips made four saves for the Colonials.

The Nittany Lions continued to dominate play over the next several minutes. Goding and Hall took dueling penalties for cross-checking and unsportsmanlike conduct at 9:04 and Robert Morris was able to get a power play at 12:27 on another penalty on Outwater, but Penn State killed it off again.

Janecke got a game misconduct at 13:59 after receiving a minor penalty for a body check, giving RMU a brief 5-on-3, but they were unable to capitalize on either chance.

The final minutes of an uneventful third period wound down, and the Nittany Lions notched yet another shutout in conference play.
