Penn State History Lesson: Bill Clinton & The Berkey Creamery

On May 10, 1996, Bill Clinton gave the commencement address to the Penn State Class of 1996. On that same trip to Happy Valley, the former president visited the Berkey Creamery and became the only person to do the unthinkable: mix ice cream flavors.
If you’ve ever been on an official campus tour, you might’ve heard this fact — and here’s the backstory.
All Penn State students, fans, alumni, and friends must follow two simple rules when getting ice cream from the Creamery: You must only get blue and white sprinkles, and you cannot mix flavors. The sprinkles are meant to show your Penn State pride, but there are reasons not to mix flavors.
The main reason is the cross-contamination policy. The Creamery has stringent rules to prevent cross-contamination and to avoid any contact with peanuts and certain dairy products. Another reason is to keep the line moving at a steady and productive pace. We’ve all seen the Creamery’s line on the Sunday morning after a home football game, and this rule makes perfect sense.
So how did the former president get around this rule? There are a few different versions of the story, but this is what we believe to be true.
Originally, Clinton ordered a scoop of Peachy Paterno on a cone, and then asked for a scoop of Cherry Quist to be added on top. The worker originally told him no, but the manager on duty made this sacred one-time decision. To give him both flavors.
After indulging in his sacred scoops, the former president stated, “If I’d have known it was against the rules, I wouldn’t have done it.” And, this turned out to be true. When he made his return to State College in 2000, he returned to the Creamery and simply ordered a cone of Peachy Paterno, as well as buying a few gallons of ice cream to take home with him.
While this story may be a bit obnoxious and may not seem like a big deal to some, this 1996 incident is a piece of Penn State lore that will go down in history. And who knows? If another president makes their way to the Creamery, maybe they too will be able to get two different flavors.
So, unless you’re a former president and your name is Bill Clinton, we recommend not trying to order two different flavors at once from the Berkey Creamery. Even still, he learned the rules and never did it again.
