Penn State Wrestling Remains At No. 1, Maintains Eight In Top 10 In National Polls

The Nittany Lions were ranked No. 1 in the most recent NWCA coaches poll on Tuesday, securing all but two first-place votes. No. 2 Ohio State received the rest as it stays at 6-0 on the season.

As for Intermat’s individual rankings, there are a few changes heading into week four of Penn State’s season.

At 133 pounds, true freshman Marcus Blaze rose to No. 11 in the country after being ranked No. 12 last week. Blaze took first in the Black Knight Invitational on November 23, going 4-0 and beating No. 22 Ethan Berginic of Army in the finals by 21-6 tech fall.

At 141 pounds, Aaron Nagao rose to No. 8 in the country. The Nittany Lion was ranked No. 8 before taking second in the Black Knight event. Nagao was in a position to win the tournament but was injured in the finals after taking a 3-0 lead. His status remains uncertain, as there has been no update on his injury.

At 157 pounds, PJ Duke rose to No. 15 on this week’s rankings after being ranked No. 16 last week. The true freshman took first place in the Black Knight Invitational, going 4-0 and beating teammate Joe Sealey 2-1 in the finals. There seems to be an ongoing competition for the starting spot; however, Duke should have the leg up after taking first in the latest event.

Shayne Van Ness, Mitchell Mesenbrink, Levi Haines, and Josh Barr remain at the top spots for their respective weight classes.

The Nittany Lions return to dual action on Friday, December 5, when Penn State travels to Philadelphia to take on Drexel. The match is due to begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be streamed on FloWrestling.
