The W’REC’king Crew: Penn State Volleyball’s Famous Student Section

At Penn State, the wRECking Crew has become a defining part of the gameday experience for both the men’s and women’s volleyball teams. What began as a small, spirited group in the mid-2010s has grown into one of the most passionate student sections in collegiate volleyball.

President Scott Brander first joined after attending matches his freshman year. He said his background as a high school volleyball player and the energy he saw in the section’s leaders pushed him to get involved. He later joined the board and now handles responsibilities ranging from game-day setup to communication with Penn State Athletics.

Brander said the group’s goal is straightforward: create an environment that benefits the team. Players and coaches often express appreciation for the section’s involvement, and he credited the Crew’s volume and consistency for helping Penn State gain a signature home edge.

One of Brander’s most memorable experiences came at last year’s national semifinal, which he called the best match he has seen in person.

Social media manager Grace Davis joined the organization to take on a leadership role in a sport she has long followed. She works to increase attendance by building engagement online.

“There are always fans there to fill up the place by the first serve. The atmosphere never disappoints,” Davis said.

Davis called the wRECking Crew unmatched, determined disruptors. She noted their key role in making Rec Hall one of the toughest places to play in college volleyball. With signature chants like “How high’s the net? Too high!” and “Ace, ace, ace!” — plus a signature whiteboard where members poke fun at opponents — the wRECking Crew has a real impact on opposing teams.

“We definitely play a role in some of the opposing team’s mistakes,” Davis said. “Rec Hall is always a common choice when players are asked where they don’t like to play.”

Both Brander and Davis said the organization is preparing for growth. Brander said interest in board positions has increased significantly, and he expects next year’s executive board to be larger and more diverse in perspective. Davis echoed that expanding the board would create more opportunities for students to contribute and ensure continuity after current leaders graduate.

“Whether it’s seeing everyone together at the end of a match to sing the alma mater or our open practice pizza hangouts, helping grow others’ love for volleyball and Penn State has been incredible,” Brander said.

“This group means a lot. It’s given me so many opportunities, meeting new people, cheering front row, and supporting a sport I’ve always loved,” Davis added.

One thing is certain: when the lights come up and the first serve sails across the net, the wRECking Crew will be there front row to set the tone for another unforgettable year of Penn State volleyball.
