Report: Penn State Football Tight Ends Coach Ty Howle Hired As Virginia Tech Offensive Coordinator

Penn State football co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach Ty Howle is set to join James Franklin at Virginia Tech as the offensive coordinator, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel. He has been with the Nittany Lions since 2020.
Entering his fifth season with the Nittany Lions in 2025, Howle is regarded as one of the best tight end coaches in the country. In 2024, he was named the Football Scoop’s 2024 National Tight Ends Coach of the Year.
This was largely due to the development and success of Tyler Warren, the No. 14 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Warren had one of the best seasons as a tight end in Penn State history. He was named a first-team All-American, the 2024 Kwalick-Clark Big Ten Tight End of the Year, a Paul Hornung Award finalist, a semifinalist for the Walter Camp Player of the Year, and became the program’s first-ever John Mackey Award winner.
Howle saw the development of guys like Pat Freiermuth, Brenton Strange, Theo Johnson, and Tyler Warren during his tenure. He is a large reason Penn State has risen in the “Tight End U” debates.
Before Penn State, Howle spent four seasons with Western Illinois. His first two years were as the offensive line coach, but he was an associate head coach and co-offensive coordinator for the 2017 and 2018 seasons.
Howle is also a Penn State letterman, playing for the Nittany Lions on the offensive line from 2009 to 2013. He is the first current Penn State on-field staffer to join Franklin and the Hokies.
