State College History Lesson: What Happened To Ray Gricar?

Nobody has seen or heard from Ray Gricar in over 20 years.

Gricar was an American lawyer who served as the district attorney of Centre County, Pennsylvania, from 1985 until 2005. On April 15, 2005, Gricar mysteriously went missing and has not been heard from since.

The Centre County district attorney was reported missing to the authorities after he never returned home after going on a road trip. Gricar’s car was later found in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, with his cell phone still inside the vehicle, as well as ashes from cigarettes, but Gricar never smoked, according to people close to him.

Mysteriously, his laptop was not in the car but was later found alongside the laptop’s hard drive in the Susquehanna River. The hard drive and laptop were not found together, suggesting they were removed before being dipped into the river.

Gricar’s brother, Roy, committed suicide in 1996, and his body was later found in the Great Miami River near his home in Ohio. When authorities found Gricar’s car at an antique shop in Lewisburg, it bore some similarities to the location of the vehicle of Gricar’s brother when he committed suicide in 1996.

Police also said sniffer dogs acted as if it was possible Gricar could have ended up in a different vehicle instead of jumping into the Susquehanna River.

There has been no credible trace of Gricar since the laptop and hard drive were found.

The disappearance of such a high-profile figure left authorities and community members in the area dumbfounded for years. Gricar infamously declined to press charges against longtime Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, well before the scandal broke out years after Gricar’s vanishment.

After years of searching and tips that led to dead ends, Gricar was declared legally dead in 2011 after the case had gone cold.

There are multiple theories of what happened to Gricar on that day in mid-April, one of which is that he died by suicide, as his brother did. However, he had no history of depression or suicidal thoughts, and his family strongly opposed this idea and said he was looking forward to retirement.

Some argue he fled to Europe, where he has family and often visited from time to time, or he could have gone elsewhere to start a new life.

The last main theory people have conjured up is that he died by foul play. People brought up Gricar’s decision to decline to prosecute Sandusky for alleged child sexual abuse, and that could be linked to his disappearance. He also dealt with high-profile cases throughout his time as district attorney, and any one of those could have had a motive to cause Gricar harm, but no public threats had ever been made against him.

For all those years, authorities have never been able to figure out what happened to Gricar. There have been alleged sightings of him since April 15, 2005, around the country, including in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, but none have been deemed credible enough.

To this day, his disappearance is still a mystery and one that fascinates the State College area.

Folks with any credible information on the case can report a tip here.
