Connecting Car Enthusiasts Around Campus: Meet The Official Penn State Car Club

Cars are a part of everyday life, and you don’t need to own them to love them. Car culture continues to swarm social media, but what are some ways Penn State students can get involved in this community?
Let us introduce you to the Penn State Car Club, a group of students brought together with one thing in common: their love for cars.
Founded over 20 years ago, the club connects car enthusiasts from meeting to meeting. Club president Tom Scheuer said the club is open to all cars, regardless of the make, model, or even whether you own a car or not. Scheuer said many people have joined the club while attending meetings by bike, bus, or on foot. With a little over 90 members, students are bound to have a good time hanging out, learning about cars, and attending car-related events.
With weekly car meets, the club can welcome new members at any time and expand the love and passion students have for cars. While this may seem very laid-back for some, Vice President Connor Morse plays a large role in planning extended events.
Some of these trips include traveling to Watkins Glen International, a historic raceway in New York. Watkins Glen is known for hosting various thrilling motorsport events, like the Formula One United States Grand Prix and the NASCAR Cup Series. Students get the opportunity to drive on the track and experience the rush of adrenaline that comes with one of the most famous racetracks in the world.
Scheuer said the club tries to avoid things like dues or a point system, making it more appealing to the general Penn State audience.
As the fall semester wraps up, there are no further events until students get back from winter break. On the bright side, the spring semester will bring more people, more cars, and more opportunities for events.
“We have some fun, smaller events once it gets warmer, like going on cruises after the meets and driving to lakes to hang out,” Morse said.
Morse added that the club goes to Black Moshannon State Park and Shavers Creek often in the spring to hang out and take pictures. They went on a camping trip to Cherry Springs State Park this semester, where they had a great time enjoying nature and talking about cars.
Scheuer said he’s met a lot of his friends through the club.
“Connor and I are roommates now, but we met through the car club. All of our friends have come from this club, and it truly is just an amazing experience,” Scheuer said.
Folks interested in joining the Penn State Car Club can attend a meeting every Friday at 4 p.m. behind the EEL Building. There’s no official process to join, so folks can simply show up.
The Penn State Car Club will also table during the Spring Involvement Fair at the HUB, where folks have the opportunity to experience a racing simulator placed at no other than Watkins Glen International.
