OS Reviews: 7 Brew

The long-awaited coffee shop is open, folks!

7 Brew Coffee celebrated its grand opening in State College on December 9, bringing its signature drive-thru experience to South Atherton Street. The menu offers a wide range of options, from fun coffee flavors to unique energy drinks.

A few of our staffers made the trip to check it out for themselves and see whether the drinks live up to the hype.

Malea Nadeo: Cinnamon Roll Latte

As a barista, I love checking out new coffee shops in the area. But that does come with the consequence that I’ve developed a picky palate for coffee. So, when I pulled into 7 Brew, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I didn’t realize that it was strictly drive-thru, and seeing both lanes packed with cars did make me nervous about the wait.

A super-friendly worker came up to my car and walked me through some of their most popular drinks. I decided to go with the Cinnamon Roll Latte — white mocha and cinnamon syrups mixed with milk and espresso. My medium-sized drink came to $6.15 plus a tip. A bit steep for the size, but pretty on par with other places like Starbucks or Dunkin.

Within five minutes, my drink was ready. It looked a little on the milkier side at first glance. Yes, lattes are mostly milk, but this one was particularly light in color. Still, my first sip immediately made me smile. It had the perfect level of sweetness, not too sweet, but just right. The espresso wasn’t overpowering, and the flavors really tasted like a cinnamon roll.

If you want a coffee drink without a strong coffee flavor, this is a winner. I chugged it on the drive home, immediately making my stomach feel like boots in a washing machine (hence why the drink in my photo is almost gone).

But was it worth it? Absolutely. Will I be back? Without a doubt.

Experience: 9/10. Price: 6/10. Wait Time: 10/10. Staff Kindness: 10/10.

Ella Wehmeyer: Blondie Iced Latte

I’m no stranger to a good 7 Brew coffee, so I was very excited to hear that they were coming to State College. I got a small Blondie iced latte, and it was decent. The coffee was a little too milky for my liking, but that happens sometimes with almost every coffee shop. The line was pretty lengthy, but I would say it’s definitely worth the wait.

Maggie Alderisio: Strawberry Blue Raspberry Refresher With Cold Foam

I wanted a strawberry refresher and asked the worker for a recommendation. I ended up with eight different flavors in a cup with cold foam on top. It was $7 for a small, and carbonation with cold foam is not the move.

Tessa Torres-Hoffman: Ocean Breeze With Strawberry

This was the worst drink I’ve ever tasted. 0/10.

Hannah Fuller: Vanilla & Cherry 7

As a New Yorker, I had never heard of 7 Brew. But with all of the excitement around it, I was looking forward to trying it. I got a Vanilla and Cherry 7 and am disappointed to say it wasn’t for me. Next time I’ll be sure to try something else on the menu.

Tia Kaschauer: Ocean 7

My first time at 7 Brew will definitely be my last. The menu is confusing, just like the drive-thru. I personally would rather dry scoop pre-workout than ever drink an energy drink from here again. Sure, it’s a cute color, but it tasted awful. It tasted like cheap coconut lip gloss you’d get for Christmas when you were four. Save your money and time, go get a Celsius.

Emily Bonavita: Vanilla Iced Blondie With Almond Milk

I was really excited to try 7 Brew since everyone hypes it up, but my experience fell short. What I expected to be the best coffee turned out to be overly sweet and way too milk-heavy. I usually prefer my coffee less sweet, so I ordered the Blondie half-sweet, yet it was still overpoweringly sugary.

I think I would’ve liked this drink much better had I added an extra shot of espresso. The overall experience was overwhelming, and the menu was confusing to navigate. On a positive note, the service was great, and the line moved quickly. Even though I didn’t love my drink this time, I definitely want to go back and try something else.
