Penn State Wrestling Remains At No. 1, Presents Eight In Top Five In National Polls

The Nittany Lions were ranked No. 1 in the most recent NWCA coaches poll on Tuesday, securing all but two first-place votes. Penn State beat North Dakota State and No. 24 Stanford this weekend at the Journeymen Collegiate Duals event in Nashville, Tennessee. Ohio State remains at No. 2 with a 10-0 record on the season after defeating Little Rock and No. 3 Iowa State at the same event.

In Intermat’s individual rankings, some Penn State wrestlers have moved up from their positions last week.

At 133 pounds, true freshman Marcus Blaze jumped to No. 5 in the country after being ranked No. 10 last week. Blaze defeated No. 29 Tristan Daugherty of North Dakota State 11-3 and No. 7 Tyler Knox by pin this past weekend.

Aaron Nagao dropped to No. 8 this week after yet another missed event. Nagao has been dealing with an injury since the Black Knight Invitational and has yet to get back on the mat for the Nittany Lions.

True freshman PJ Duke rose to No. 4 in the country after being ranked No. 8 last week. Duke defeated No. 25 Gavin Drexler of North Dakota State by major decision and No. 9 Daniel Cardenas of Stanford in a 5-2 decision.

Josh Barr is back, folks. Last season’s national runner-up competed for the first time this season and did not disappoint. Barr defeated Devin Wasley by technical fall in the second period and No. 19 Angelo Posada with another technical fall, 19-3. His efforts returned him to the top of the rankings after being unranked during his injury.

Luke Lilledahl remains at No. 2, Rocco Welsh stays at No. 4, and Cole Mirasola stays put at No. 13 in the country.

Shayne Van Ness, Mitchell Mesenbrink, and Levi Haines continue to impress and have not budged from the top spots in their respective weight classes.

Penn State wrestling will be back in action when it faces No. 17 Rutgers on January 10 in Rec Hall at 4 p.m. The match will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
