Penn State Football Underdogs Against Clemson In Pinstripe Bowl

The Nittany Lions are going bowling, folks.

After clinching a bowl game with a regular-season finale win over Rutgers, Penn State football will play in the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl against Clemson at noon on Saturday, December 27, at Yankee Stadium. It will also play its final game under the direction of interim head coach Terry Smith before newly hired head coach Matt Campbell takes over the reins.

Heading into the Pinstripe Bowl, the Nittany Lions are underdogs for the fourth time this season. The opening line against Clemson is set at -3 points in the Tigers’ favor, with the over/under listed at 48.5 points, according to DraftKings. The moneyline favors Clemson at -162, with Penn State being a +136 underdog.

After sitting with a 3-6 record with three regular-season games left, Penn State managed to win out to clinch a bowl game. Now, it will play in the Pinstripe Bowl for the first time since 2014, when it defeated Boston College. Along with that, this will be the first meeting in history between the Tigers and the Nittany Lions.

The blue and white finished the regular season with a 4-8 record against the spread after failing to cover the spread against Rutgers. In their three games this season as an underdog, the Nittany Lions went winless. However, they are 6-1 in their last seven games against teams in the ACC, according to OddsShark.

While it has been almost a month since Penn State last played and there have been opt-outs like Nick Singleton, it enters this game with considerable momentum, having won its previous three games. Despite the defensive struggles against Rutgers, the team has scored 28+ points during this winning streak, while the defense was allowing 10 points per game before the blemish against Rutgers. Despite this, it has lost 13 straight games as an underdog, according to OddsShark.

As for Clemson, it finished the regular season with a 7-5 record and 5-7 against the spread. Just like the Nittany Lions, the Tigers ended the regular season on a high note by winning four consecutive games. Despite that, they have struggled to cover the spread as a favorite, as they have gone 3-10 against the spread in their last 13 games as a favorite, according to OddsShark.

This matchup is between two teams that failed to meet their expectations, as both teams were ranked in the top four heading into the regular season. Now, both teams enter this game on winning streaks and wanting to end their disappointing seasons on a high note.
