Brainstorming Matt Campbell’s Burger For The Field

A few months ago, in the midst of the treacherous Penn State football coaching search, Onward State brainstormed burger ideas for the potential candidates that The Field Burger and Tap could serve to its guests.

From The Brohm Bomb to the Diaz Discipline, we crafted sensational dishes that are both tasty and related to the coaches in one way or another.

In early December, Penn State announced that it would hire Matt Campbell to take the reins of the program. Naturally, we had to follow through with our original story and concoct a new burger option for the blue and white’s latest leader.

The Matt Camburger

The Matt Camburger would first and foremost feature an Eleven Oaks Wagyu patty, as is traditional of The Field. Campbell gives off a down-to-earth vibe and is someone who likes to stick to the basics. The burger must be hearty, and the wagyu patty accomplishes just that.

Every good burger needs a good cheese, and I think a sharp white cheddar will work best. Campbell is a midwestern guy, and what better symbol of that than cheddar cheese. The cheddar can provide a bite when needed, just as the coach will need to have that extra passion to motivate his team. And, of course, the color represents the Penn State White Out.

Next, we’re going to get a little crazy. This burger will feature double the protein. On top of the patty will be a butterflied kielbasa, or Polish sausage. Campbell is from Massillon, Ohio, a state that has a lot of Central and Eastern European influence. The kielbasa will be flavorful and pack an exciting punch similar to the excitement the Nittany Lion faithful feels toward the hiring.

Resting on the sausage will be a corn relish with diced tomatoes. The combination will mix well with the kielbasa, and the flavor profile will be that of a summer barbecue. The corn will be reminiscent of Campbell’s tenure at Iowa State, with Iowa being the top corn producer in the United States. Tomato juice is the state beverage of Ohio, another nod to Campbell’s home and early stomping grounds with Toledo.

The most important part of the burger is arguably the bun. It’s the first thing that your mouth touches when you dig in, so it has to be done right. A pretzel bun perfectly captures the flavor once again, and will be a great compliment to the dish. Not to mention that Pennsylvania is the pretzel capital of America, producing roughly 80% of the nation’s supply. Campbell is now the head coach of the state’s largest football program, so it’s only right that we include something that represents the Keystone State.

Coach Campbell, if you’re reading this, let us know if The Matt Camburger suits your taste. If so, let’s hope The Field can make this creation come to life for you and all Penn Staters to enjoy on gamedays.
