Let The Kids Play: An Open Letter For Penn State Hockey To Host Viral Pennsylvania Youth Hockey Team

Youth hockey in Pennsylvania found itself in the national spotlight earlier this month after a “Mites on Ice” intermission scrimmage at a Hershey Bears AHL game turned into a viral brawl involving kids from the Central Penn Panthers Youth Ice Hockey Club.
The incident occurred during an intermission exhibition at the Hershey Bears’ game against the Cleveland Monsters at the Giant Center, where players eight and under were playing in front of a decently packed crowd. Video clips going around social media showed the children dropping gloves, throwing punches, and piling onto each other, all while no officials or adults stepped onto the ice to stop the chaos.
The videos spread way beyond the hockey world and even sparked investigations and debates. The Atlantic Amateur Hockey Association first stated that the incident was a “staged fight,” while the Central Penn Panthers later disputed that, saying the moment was not planned.
The team plays at Regency Sportsrink in Lancaster, which is just over two hours from State College, and makes Pegula Ice Arena a reasonable stop. That’s why Penn State hockey should invite the Panthers to play during an intermission at Pegula Ice Arena, the same way the Hershey Bears did.
Beyond anything else, it would be a cool experience for the kids. Coming from Pennsylvania, a decent number of them probably already consider themselves Penn State hockey fans, and it’s not hard to imagine a few of them being fans of Gavin McKenna, specifically. Getting to skate during an intermission at Pegula is something 8-year-olds won’t forget.
It’s also hard to imagine Penn State fans not being into it. Intermission youth hockey games are already crowd-pleasers, and this one would come with a little extra buzz, given the recent attention surrounding the team.
An intermission game at Pegula would let the Panthers actually play hockey this time around, hopefully with officials on the ice, and enough coaches nearby in case things get out of hand again.
