No. 1 Penn State Wrestling Wallops No. 25 Indiana 48-0

The top-ranked Nittany Lions (10-0, 4-0 Big Ten) continued their dominant streak of matches with their sixth shutout victory of the season, beating the No. 25-ranked Indiana Hoosiers (6-2, 1-2 Big Ten) 48-0 on Friday night in Rec Hall.

Penn State picked up nine bonus-point victories, including two pins, five technical falls, and two major decisions. The Nittany Lions also registered 48 takedowns to Indiana’s three.

Highlighting the match were pinfall victories from Luke Lilledahl and Mitchell Mesenbrink, which helped torch the scoreboard en route to the Nittany Lions’ 81st consecutive dual victory.

How It Happened

125 Pounds

In the first match of the night, No. 1 Luke Lilledahl took on No. 11 Jacob Moran at 125 pounds. “Lightning” Luke struck first blood with a takedown within the first minute. After a Moran escape, Lilledahl eventually got to his offense once more before the end of the period, securing another takedown and garnering about a minute of riding time.

Moran escaped to start the second period, but Lilledahl was quick to get in another takedown before getting into a bow-and-arrow pinning combination, downing the Hoosier with 20 seconds remaining in the second period.

133 Pounds

Up next, No. 4 Marcus Blaze faced off against Blaine Frazier. The Nittany Lion scored his first takedown and tallied nearly a minute of riding time before Frazier escaped. Blaze got to another two takedowns to extend his lead to 9-2 with close to two minutes of riding time at the end of the first period.

Frazier escaped to start the second period but was eventually taken down for the fourth time, extending Blaze’s lead to 12-3. The Hoosier escaped and was forced into a scramble situation that would eventually get called for a potentially dangerous position. Blaze scored his fifth takedown and finished the period with just under three minutes of riding time.

Blaze escaped to start the third period and secured his sixth takedown of the match to beat the Hoosier in a 20-4 technical fall.

141 Pounds

Next, No. 11 Braeden Davis wrestled No. 25 Henry Porter at 141 pounds. Davis was taken down to start the first period, but escaped after only 12 seconds. The Nittany Lion responded with a takedown of his own to go up 4-3 after the first minute. Porter was given a point for a violation committed by Davis, to which the Nittany Lion responded with his second takedown. Davis led the contest 7-5 with over 1:30 of riding time heading into the second period.

The Hoosier escaped after 30 seconds, but was taken down for the third time along the edge of the mat. Porter was also docked for stalling in the exchange, adding a point to Davis’ total. The Nittany Lion scored his fourth takedown with little time left on the clock to soar into the third period up 13-7.

Davis had an impressive sprawl in neutral position before tallying his fifth takedown. The Hoosier escaped but was quickly taken down again to make the score 19-8. Porter was let up and eventually taken back down for the seventh time. Braeden Davis registered seven takedowns on his way to a 24-10 major decision.

149 Pounds

Next, No. 1 Shayne Van Ness faced off against Joey Buttler. The Nittany Lion secured a single-leg takedown where he went straight for the bow and arrow pinning combination. Van Ness walked away from the exchange up 7-1 before taking the Hoosier down for a second time right before the buzzer.

Buttler escaped to start the second and narrowly escaped a dangerous shot attempt before the time ran out.

Van Ness escaped to start the final frame and scored his third takedown of the match to make it 14-2 with a minute left. The Nittany Lion got to his fourth takedown to make it a 20-3 technical fall.

157 Pounds

In the last match before the half, No. 3 PJ Duke wrestled Bryce Lowery at 157 pounds. Duke was quick to his offense, scoring the opening takedown within the first 30 seconds. Duke scored his second takedown after a minute and a third takedown 30 seconds later. The Nittany Lion scored three more takedowns before the end of the first period to make it 18-5 after one.

The match restarted in neutral position, where the Nittany Lion made quick work to get his seventh takedown to secure the 21-5 technical fall.

165 Pounds

After the break, No. 1 Mitchell Mesenbrink took on No. 19 Tyler Lillard. The Nittany Lion struck immediately with a takedown after only 10 seconds. Mesenbrink flipped Lillard over and secured four near-fall points. Lillard escaped and was quickly taken down again to make it 10-1. The Nittany Lion once again halved the Hoosier for another four-point near fall before the end of the first period.

In the second period, Mesenbrink got to his pinning combination for the third time, putting the Hoosier away with a minute left in the second period.

174 Pounds

Next, No. 1 Levi Haines faced off against Orlando Cruz at 174 pounds. The Nittany Lion got to his offense with a takedown before securing four near-fall points.

In the second period, Haines escaped to make it 8-0. The Nittany Lion secured his second takedown and forced the Hoosier into a stall call; however, no other points were scored as Haines led the contest 11-0.

In the third period, Haines scored his third and fourth takedowns to secure the 17-1 technical fall.

184 Pounds

Next, No. 1 Rocco Welsh wrestled No. 16 Sam Goin at 184 pounds. Welsh connected on his first takedown about midway through the first. After an escape, Welsh scored his second and then his third takedown of the period before the end of the first.

Goin escaped to start the second, but was taken down for the fourth time to make it 13-3.

In the third, Welsh escaped, but was taken down to make it 14-6. Welsh escaped once again, but was taken down for the second time as time expired. The Nittany Lion would walk away with the 15-9 decision victory.

197 Pounds

At 197 pounds, No. 1 Josh Barr faced off against No. 14 Gabe Sollars. Barr scored his first takedown after a scramble situation. Sollars escaped and narrowly defended a deep shot from Barr before the end of the first.

Barr escaped at the start of the second and recorded another takedown to make it 7-2 after a penalty point at the end of the period.

In the third period, Sollars escaped; however, the Nittany Lion rattled off his third and fourth takedown en route to a 14-6 major decision victory.

Heavyweight

In the final match of the night, No. 12 Cole Mirasola wrestled Caleb Marzolino. Mirasola started quickly with three takedowns within the first minute. Mirasola went on to score four more takedowns before the end of the period to win by technical fall 22-6.

Penn State wrestling will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, January 24, when the Nittany Lions travel to College Park to take on the Maryland Terrapins at 5 p.m. The match will be streamed on Big Ten Plus.
