Felony Charge Dropped Against Gavin McKenna

Prosecutors in Centre County are set to drop the felony aggravated assault charge against Penn State hockey player Gavin McKenna, the Pennsylvania Office of the District Attorney announced in a press release.

McKenna was arraigned earlier this week after being charged with following an alleged altercation in downtown State College late Saturday night. The incident occurred along the 100 block of South Pugh Street, with a report filed at 10:35 p.m.

State College police stated on Wednesday night that McKenna allegedly struck a 21-year-old, causing facial injuries that required corrective surgery. The felony charge was dropped after police and the District Attorney’s Office reviewed video evidence of the incident and decided it did not support the original Aggravated Assault charge.

“Prosecution will go forward with the misdemeanour Simple Assault and other summary charges as they relate to the serious injuries suffered by the victim,” the press release read.

McKenna is still set for a preliminary hearing on February 11.
