No. 4 Penn State Women’s Hockey Trounces Over Lindenwood 5-0

No. 4 Penn State women’s hockey (28-4, 21-1 AHA) finished its sweep over Lindenwood (11-19-2, 9-12-1 AHA) with a 5-0 victory on the road Saturday afternoon.
With goals by five different players, including two by Grace Outwater, Penn State puts a cap on road play this regular season with a dominant shutout victory.
How It Happened
Lindenwood won the opening draw to start the game. The first shot on net belonged to Lindenwood’s Ellie Muscedere, but Katie DeSa shrugged it off.
A little over three minutes into the game, Mikah Keller won a faceoff in the offensive zone, and Grace Outwater sent one up high, beating Madison Bowtell blocker side to make it 1-0 Nittany Lions.
After 10 minutes of scoreless hockey with plenty of Nittany Lion pressure without beating Bowtell, Abby Stonehouse broke through and doubled Penn State’s lead.
Shortly after, Penn State got the first power play of the game after a tripping call on Lindenwood. The Nittany Lions couldn’t muster even a shot on net before the penalty was killed.
In the final minute of the period, Lindenwood’s Tatem Starlight-Yellowfly registered two shots, but DeSa fought both off to keep Penn State’s lead at two after the first period.
The second period was held scoreless for the opening 18 minutes despite the Nittany Lions tallying plenty of shots. Bowtell stood strong until a Keller wrister found its way over the glove of Bowtell to make it 3-0 Penn State.
The Nittany Lions’ momentum was quickly put to a halt after Leah Stecker was rung up for a tripping minor. Several blocked shots by Penn State kept the shutout alive after two.
Penn State finished the kill early on in the third. Katelyn Roberts kept it going for the away team with a rocket to expand the lead to four.
Again, the Nittany Lions would commit a penalty shortly after a goal; this time, it was Maddy Christian being sent to the box. Two saves by DeSa highlighted the kill for Penn State.
Just twenty seconds after Christian came out of the box, Stecker took her second penalty of the game, this time for cross-checking. The power play for Lindenwood was cut short after Josey Dunne-Weeks was called for contact to the head, making it four-on-four.
No goals would result from the penalties, but Outwater would get her second of the game with a backhand beauty soon after everyone served their time in the box.
Penn State would sit on its lead to keep it 5-0 to complete the sweep with a shutout victory.
Takeaways
- DeSa was a clear difference maker in this one, stopping all of Lindenwood’s 26 shutouts to get her 10th shutout on the year and the 23rd of her career.
- With three skaters out due to the Olympics, it’s great to see Penn State get offense from a variety of different players, with goals coming from four separate Nittany Lions.
- Grace Outwater extended her lead as the team’s leading goal-scorer, adding two more to the tally and closing in on 40 for her career. It now extends her goal-scoring streak to nine games.
