Penn State Wrestling Remains At No. 1, Places Nine In Top 6 In National Polls

What a weekend it was, folks.

The top-ranked Nittany Lions took down their toughest opponent of the season on Friday night, beating No. 2 Ohio State 36-5 in front of a record-breaking crowd in the Bryce Jordan Center to claim their sixth straight Big Ten dual championship while also continuing their streak to 85 dual victories in a row.

In this week’s NWCA coaches poll, there were no surprises as Penn State took home every first-place vote while Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Iowa State, and Nebraska rounded out the top 5.

It was a big week for the Nittany Lions in the individual rankings as well. According to Intermat, there are nine Penn Staters ranked within the top 6 in their respective weight classes.

True freshman Marcus Blaze defeated then-No. 2 Ben Davino on Friday night in a 3-2 overtime thriller to improve to 18-0 on the season. After being ranked No. 4 last week, the Nittany Lion claimed Davino’s No. 2 position.

Heavyweight Cole Mirasola had his best collegiate win on Friday night, defeating then-No. 3 Nick Feldman in sudden victory. After struggling to find his footing early on, Mirasola is now ranked No. 6 in the country, his highest of the season.

Luke Lilledahl, Shayne Van Ness, Mitchell Mesenbrink, Levi Haines, Rocco Welsh, and Josh Barr all remained at No. 1 in the country after picking up wins on Friday night.

PJ Duke stayed put at No. 4 in the country at 157 pounds after improving to 15-1 on the season.

Braeden Davis’ rank remained the same at No. 12 after picking up another loss, this time coming at the hands of two-time defending national champion Jesse Mendez.

Penn State will host Princeton at Rec Hall on Friday, February 20, at 7 p.m. in the final dual match of the season. The dual will be broadcast on Big Ten Plus.
