Penn State Women’s Hockey Earns Two AHA Weekly Honors

No. 3 Penn State women’s hockey saw two standouts recognized this week, as senior captain Tessa Janecke was named Atlantic Hockey America Forward of the Week and freshman defender Danica Maynard earned Rookie of the Week honors, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon.

Janecke’s latest accolade came after a dominant showing in Penn State’s AHA semifinal sweep of Syracuse. The senior returned to Hockey Valley fresh off a gold medal performance with Team USA at the Winter Olympics and made an immediate impact, tallying four goals across the two-game series.

In game one, Janecke recorded the fourth hat trick of her career, scoring once in each period as the Nittany Lions rolled to a 7-0 victory. She followed with another goal in Penn State’s 2-1 win in game two, securing the program’s spot in the AHA Tournament Championship.

Janecke leads Atlantic Hockey America in points with 44, compiling 23 goals and 21 assists this season. The weekly honor marks her fourth Forward of the Week recognition this year, previously earning the award on October 22, November 25, and January 13. She was also named the conference’s Forward of the Month for September/October and November.

Maynard, meanwhile, continued her strong freshman campaign on the ice. The Lake Country, British Columbia, native tallied an assist in each semifinal contest while contributing to a defensive unit that allowed just one goal in the series.

Through the postseason, Maynard has totaled 33 points on nine goals and 24 assists. She currently leads the nation in points and assists among freshman defenders.

The Rookie of the Week title is Maynard’s fifth weekly award and sixth overall AHA honor this season. She was previously named Defenseman of the Week on October 14, October 21, November 25, and February 10, and earned Defenseman of the Month recognition for September/October.

Penn State will face No. 12 Mercyhurst in the AHA Tournament Championship at 2 p.m. Saturday at Pegula Ice Arena. The Nittany Lions are seeking their fourth consecutive AHA Tournament title.
