Pack Pegula Ice Arena: An Open Letter To Go To Penn State Women’s Hockey’s Frozen Four Game

Penn State women’s hockey made history last Saturday as it advanced to its first Frozen Four in program history. Now, this team will get the chance to play the Frozen Four in front of its home crowd as it looks to win its first NCAA Tournament. Students must show up to support Penn State in its biggest game of the season.

Students have sold-out games for Penn State men’s hockey all the time. Yet, despite how good the women’s team has been this season, we haven’t done the same for women’s hockey games. Tickets were always free for women’s hockey games during the regular season and the AHA championship tournament. However, that didn’t attract students to go to games, and there were always many empty seats in the student section, and the energy was low.

Even for Penn State women’s hockey’s regional final against UConn, there were only 1,615 fans when it was on the verge of history. That has to change ahead of its Frozen Four matchup against No. 2-seeded Wisconsin, and the program’s attendance record of 1,838 fans, which came in the Beaver Stadium game against Robert Morris, should easily be broken on Friday.

In a year when many Penn State sports teams, except wrestling, have struggled, the women’s hockey team has been one of the best in Happy Valley. It has broken program records this season, winning 33 games, its fourth straight AHA championship, finished with the No. 3 seed, and made it to its first Frozen Four ever.

The Nittany Lions will become the third team in women’s hockey history to play in the Frozen Four on home ice.

The Nittany Lions have already called for a White Out for Friday night’s game. This team deserves to have an electric atmosphere because it has been electric all season at home. The blue and white are 18-1 at Pegula Ice Arena so far this season, with their only loss coming in overtime against RIT. They will feed off an electric atmosphere against a Wisconsin team that has 33 wins and 11 road wins this season.

Along with that, this matchup is full of star power. There are a total of seven Winter Olympians, as Wisconsin has four and Penn State has three. Five of those Olympians were on Team USA’s gold-medal winning team, including Penn State forward Tessa Janecke. So, this game will be entertaining from start to finish.

Penn State can become the third team in NCAA women’s hockey history to win a national championship on home ice. We have a chance of witnessing history, and let’s not forget, this is the last chance to be able to watch Penn State hockey at Pegula, as Penn State men’s hockey will not be back at Pegula this season. If you want more Penn State hockey, why not go support the women’s team on the biggest stage in college women’s hockey?

Pegula Ice Arena’s 5,704-seat capacity had better be filled on Friday night because Penn State women’s hockey needs our support in its chase for a first national championship. Tickets are available on Ticketmaster, and you can go watch two Frozen Four games, with Ohio State vs Northeastern as the other one, for $25. It’s time that we pack Pegula for the first time in Penn State women’s hockey history.

With that all being said, I hope to see everyone cheer on the Nittany Lions on Friday night.
