[Photo Story] Penn State Women’s Hockey Falls Short In The Frozen Four

Penn State women’s hockey reached the Frozen Four for the first time in program history, and even with a 4-3 overtime loss to Wisconsin, the night marked a milestone on home ice. Our photographers were there as the Nittany Lions delivered one of the most electric performances Pegula has ever seen.

Warm-ups began shortly after Ohio State wrapped up a 5-0 win over Northeastern, and the building stayed loud as Penn State took the ice.

The Nittany Lions opened fast. Less than two minutes in, they earned the game’s first power play, and captain Tessa Janecke wasted no time. Her early strike not only put Penn State on the board but also marked the 200th point of her career.

Wisconsin answered quickly, but Penn State punched right back. Another power play and another goal, this time from Abby Stonehouse, sent the Nittany Lions into the first intermission with a 2-1 lead and the crowd buzzing.

The second period swung hard in Wisconsin’s favor. The Badgers controlled possession, piled up 28 shots in the frame, and eventually took a 3-2 lead heading into the third.

As the clock ran down in the third period, Penn State continued to feel the pressure.

Penn State pushed as the clock wound down, and with under five minutes left, Janecke broke free on a clean breakaway. She buried it behind Wisconsin’s Ava McNaughton, tying the game and blowing the roof off Pegula as the Lions forced overtime.

But the extra frame was short-lived. Wisconsin earned a power play seconds in, and Kirsten Simms ended it with a high shot that sent the Badgers to the national championship and closed out Penn State’s historic run.
