Former Penn State Women’s Volleyball Player Abby Detering Returns As Assistant Coach

Penn State Women’s Volleyball head coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley announced on Monday the addition of Abby Detering to her staff.
Detering began her collegiate career at Florida before joining the Nittany Lions for her junior and senior seasons. Altogether, Detering totaled 12 NCAA Tournament victories during her career.
During her career in Happy Valley, Detering saw time at setter and right side hitter. The former All-American totaled 1,793 assists and 254 kills in two seasons. She earned AVCA All-America honorable mention recognition as a senior.
Following her graduation from Penn State in December of 2017, Detering turned pro. She signed a professional contract to play with SG Kelag Klagenfurt of the Austrian League. She also played for Pays d’Aix Venelles in France.
After her playing career, Detering made the switch to coaching. Detering became an assistant at Kent State for three seasons. She helped Alex Haffner become the second setter in program history to reach 1,000 career digs at Kent State. Detering then made the move to New Jersey to work as an assistant for Rutgers.
The Scarlet Knights’ win total last season was their highest in 13 years after Detering was promoted. The Scarlet Knights posted the program’s highest hitting percentage during the rally scoring era.
Detering was named a recipient of the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s 2025 30-Under-30 Award. The program recognizes young coaches in different sectors of the sport who serve in a range of roles, from head coach to volunteer assistant to club director.
Detering joins a Penn State program that is two seasons removed from winning its eighth National Championship. The Nittany Lions qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season once again.
