Penn State Trustee Signs Letter Supporting Protect College Sports Act of 2026

Penn State Board of Trustees member Anthony Lubrano signed the Protect College Sports Act of 2026, joining dozens of college presidents, trustees, and university leaders. Gordon Gee from Ohio State and Sarah Hubbard from Michigan were the only other signees linked to Big Ten schools.
Lubrano, who was the lone Penn State representative among the 80-plus signees, is an alumni-elected trustee. He first took a seat on the board in 2012 and did not hold a spot for just two of those years. Lubrano a member of the Class of 1982 and a former member of the Penn State baseball team. He is also half of the namesake of Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, the baseball program’s home ballpark.
The letter, which was released Monday by Saving College Sports, was sent to U.S. Sens. Ted Cruz, Maria Cantwell, Eric Schmitt, and Chris Coons, expressing support for legislation to reform college athletics.
“We stand ready to work with you and key stakeholders to ensure that the Protect College Sports Act of 2026 is passed and reflects our academic mission and the needs of student-athletes and sustains the long-term vitality of college athletics nationwide,” The letter read.
The current college sports landscape has, per the letter, created “confusion, compliance challenges, competitive imbalance, and financial distress.” It argued that the bill would help implement a long-term solution to issues such as NIL, athletic transfers, eligibility, and revenue sharing.
Separate letters backing the Protect College Sports Act were also sent by ACC commissioner Brett Yormak and Big 12 commissioner James Phillips ahead of a Senate Commerce Committee hearing scheduled for Wednesday.
The Big Ten has not endorsed the bill; however, commissioner Tony Petetti released a statement thanking Cruz and Cantwell for their work on the legislation, said the conference is reviewing it, and thanked its sponsors for their efforts to bring stability to college athletics.
