Mount Nittany Health Staff Officially Begin Strike Over Contract Disputes
As of Monday, July 27, almost 1,000 Mount Nittany Medical Center staff members are on strike.
The five-day strike is a result of disputes over contracts that expired July 1. Workers argue the proposed raises don’t even cover the increased cost of living or inflation. The criticisms were exacerbated by reports that showed the hospital’s financial situation is above average in operating margins compared to other facilities.
By 7:30 a.m., dozens had gathered outside the hospital to picket, according to Centre Daily Times.
The workers—from nurses to food service employees—are represented by SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania.
Mount Nittany Health says that the facility will remain open and functioning as usual. All appointments will be kept unless the patient is contacted directly by their care team. However, labs and outpatient facilities may experience delays.
