With Sylly Week coming to an end and the first Penn State football game just a couple of days away, some folks may be looking for something to do this week.

Thankfully, the State College area offers plenty of unique places to explore, whether you’re a new student discovering campus for the first time or a returning student in need of fresh air.

Before your workload catches up with you, here are some of our picks for the coolest places to walk around State College.

Penn State Arboretum

This might be obvious, but the Arboretum is at its best during the fall semester, when the weather is still warm and the trees begin to change color.

Taking a stroll around the Arboretum is a great way to unwind after a long day of work, especially if you need some peace and quiet after a wild night in downtown State College or if you’re just trying to get away from your crazy roommate (speaking from experience).

Right next to the Arboretum is the Palmer Museum of Art, which features a great selection of art if you’re into art history and related topics. It’s worth checking out if you have spare time, and admission is free for all students.

Bellefonte Central Rail Trail

Past the Arboretum, through the surrounding neighborhoods, and beyond Sunset Park, lies the Bellefonte Central Rail Trail, which offers a flat, easy walking trail for people of all ages.

The hike to get there might be the tricky part, but we promise it’ll be worth it once you take a look around.

The trail stretches all the way out to Toftrees — or The Original Waffle Shop if you walk in the opposite direction — so bring some water and snacks if you plan on being out there for a while.

The scenery is great, and there are plenty of cool things to see along the way. Bring a friend, start walking, and see how far you can go.

Sidney Friedman Park

As for the other side of Penn State, let’s talk about where to walk in downtown State College. Specifically, Sidney Friedman Park.

From live music and food trucks to high school football games, there’s almost always something going on at the park.

Next time you’re in the area, take a few minutes to stop by and see what’s around.

White Course Undergraduate Apartments

If you’re not an engineering major but have ever wondered what’s way out on the west side of campus, the area around the White Course Undergraduate Apartments makes for a pretty nice walking path.

While any of Penn State’s residential areas can make for a nice visit — besides Pollock — the White Course Undergraduate Apartments are often overlooked because of their location.

Despite being so far out, the area has great scenery and is a nice change of pace from the busier parts of campus. If you’ve ever been curious about what lies beyond the West Deck, we highly recommend taking a stroll around.

Just watch out for flying golf balls from the Blue and White Golf Courses — you never know what’s going to hit you while walking around Penn State.
