Sending a “Where are you?” text from Beaver Stadium may soon become less of a hassle.

Penn State’s Board of Trustees Finance and Investment Committee approved a 10-year agreement with AT&T on Thursday to upgrade cellular connectivity at the stadium.

The new system is expected to be ready for the 2027 football season, ahead of which the stadium’s renovations are scheduled to be completed.

AT&T also plans interim improvements for the current season.

AT&T will replace the cellular system it installed back in 2013 with roughly three times as many antennas. Penn State says the new system will provide five times the current coverage and 18 times the bandwidth capacity.

It will be available to fans of any carrier, not just AT&T.

That’s welcome news for anyone who has watched a text refuse to send while trying to find friends on a football Saturday.

Onward State has documented the stadium’s famously bad cell service, and its Wi-Fi has drawn its own complaints.

The agreement addresses cellular service. Penn State has not announced any Wi-Fi upgrade as part of the project. The new system is expected to improve fans ability to send messages and use mobile data in 2027, but it will not address the stadium’s Wi-Fi.

The full Board of Trustees will vote on the agreement during a meeting on Friday.
