Penn State Libraries Launches ‘Safe Haven’ For Sensitive-Topic Resources

A new set of dedicated shelves of books and resources for students is now available at the Pattee and Paterno Library, Penn State Libraries announced Monday.
Safe Haven is a new Penn State initiative that provides students with information and materials on sensitive subjects, such as mental health, LGBTQ+, gender identity, and substance abuse, without having to check books out at a desk or kiosk.
The goal is to provide resources for students topics students might otherwise feel uncomfortable asking about.
The space is located in the elevator hallway of West Pattee 2.
“You can come in, browse the shelves, and get information without asking questions or identifying yourself in any way,” said Megan Gilpin, an education program specialist for library learning and the service coordinator for Safe Haven. “This is absolutely a judgment-free zone.”
The space is open from 7:45 a.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday, 7:45 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, and 11 a.m. to midnight on Sunday.
