Open Letter To CBS Sports: Penn State Football Quarterback Rocco Becht Is Better Than Lunch Winfield

CBS recently ranked Penn State football quarterback Rocco Becht outside the top 50 quarterbacks in college football. Now, I know he has struggled this season, but not even No. 50 in the country is crazy.

I’m not trying to fall for a rage-bait trap, but I believe Becht is being overlooked. He must be better than Louisiana quarterback Lunch Winfield.

I also don’t think quarterbacks from Appalachian State, North Texas, Toledo, Louisiana, Miami (Ohio), Georgia State, FAU can compete with Becht at the same level.

Among FBS quarterbacks, Becht ranks No. 34 in passing yards, No. 33 in touchdowns, and No. 55 in QBR, so tell me how he is not top 50.

Other factors affect Becht’s play as well, including Koby Howard’s absence and offensive line struggles.

We should also factor in that he’s playing teams in a conference that has produced the last three national champions. When Penn State played teams in the American, MAC, and Sun Belt conferences, it won by large margins.

For CBS to say a quarterback from the Ragin’ Cajuns is better than Becht is a stretch. Becht currently ranks third among FBS quarterbacks in career passing yards. Now, 9,274 of those came at Iowa State, but that’s still very impressive.

While this ranking is among quarterback play this season, Becht has made impressive plays with the Nittany Lions. With Howard at receiver, Becht completed 69.3% of his passes in his first three games and threw nine touchdowns. Howard was also averaging 28.7 yards per catch before his injury.

CBS’s ranking list doesn’t affect my opinion, but I do believe Becht can outplay many quarterbacks in less competitive conferences.

While the record doesn’t look strong on paper, Penn State plays at a higher level, and many players should be recognized as stronger talents than those on teams competing in one-bid conferences.
