Do-It-Yourself Cheap & Last-Minute Halloween Costumes

Halloweekend is right around the corner, and while the plans might be set, the costumes are a whole different story.
Somehow, Halloween sneaks up on students every year, leaving some folks scrambling to throw together a costume at the last minute. As college students, spending $50 on a costume you wear for a few hours just isn’t in the budget.
Luckily, a good and easy costume doesn’t need to break the bank!
With a little creativity and a dream, we headed to Goodwill to find cheap, last-minute costume ideas that won’t empty your wallet.
The Willard Preacher

If you need an easy costume, the Willard Preacher is a no-brainer.
All you need is a simple red crewneck, a pair of jeans, and this book titled “Come Be My Follower.” Chances are, you already have a pair of jeans sitting in your closet, so you’re practically halfway there.
The book is optional, of course, especially if you don’t want to carry a prop all night.
Nicky The Cowboy

Yeehaw, folks.
Nicky the Cowboy is the perfect Penn State costume if you’re looking to channel your inner cowboy and Penn State sports fan on a budget.
Grab a cowboy hat, a flannel or button-down, your favorite Penn State sports T-shirt, and a belt (preferably with a large buckle). Boots and jeans are a bonus.
The Nittany Lion

For a budget-friendly Nittany Lion look, grab an all-brown outfit, a fuzzy coat, and a striped scarf.
To really sell the look, you may be lucky enough to find lion ears to tie it all together. This costume would be great for those who can do one-handed push-ups or hype up a crowd.
The Campus Bunnies

Forget the campus squirrels. To recreate the campus bunny costume, grab a fluffy robe, some bunny ears, and an Easter wreath to wear around your neck.
This can be a great partner costume if someone else dresses as a campus squirrel.
Neeli Bendapudi’s Raise

Looking to start some conversations this Halloweekend? Penn State president Neeli Bendapudi’s raise might be the choice for you.
You can take this many ways, but we chose an all-green outfit with a gold purse to represent her money. It might be a bit more abstract than your typical Halloween costume, but it proves the best costumes sometimes need a little explanation.
LiveOn Employee

If there’s one shirt you can guarantee will be at Goodwill, it’s a LiveOn employee shirt.
All we needed for this costume was a LiveOn shirt and a navy hat. If you’re lucky enough, you may find the LiveOn hat there too. It’s cheap, easy, and super recognizable to your fellow Penn Staters.
The IM Referee That Got Hit By The Porta Potty

Dress up as the IM referee who got hit by the porta-potty. All it takes is a black-and-white striped shirt, black pants, and a traffic cone or neon orange prop.
We actually used a trick-or-treating pumpkin basket, so it was just on theme. It might be a more niche costume than the rest, but whoever recognizes it will probably giggle.
