From Penn State Athletics To Forever: Maddie & Chris Stoll’s Penn State Love Story

Some love stories begin with a spark at first sight. For Maddie and Chris Stoll, theirs began with something much simpler: a conversation at Penn State’s Morgan Academic Center.

Neither Maddie nor Chris knew that the friendship forming that day would eventually lead to marriage, careers across the country, and a life together that would include an NFL championship.

“I was not studying; I was socializing,” Maddie recalled of their first meeting.

Meanwhile, Chris was working alongside a friend Maddie already knew. She stopped by to chat, and the two began getting to know each other.

Their first encounter was not an immediate romantic connection. Instead, their relationship developed naturally over time.

“We were probably friends for two years, at least, before we started dating,” Maddie said.

That friendship became the foundation for their relationship. One that would be tested and strengthened by the demanding schedules of two Division I student-athletes.

Both Maddie and Chris spent their college years balancing academics, athletics, and the limited time they could find for each other.

Maddie played for Penn State women’s soccer and became a four-time Big Ten champion, while Chris pursued his football career as a Nittany Lion.

Their relationship officially began during the COVID-19 pandemic, when restrictions and testing requirements made it especially hard to spend time together.

Soccer and football operated under different regulations, meaning their schedules rarely lined up perfectly.

“Depending on the year, I mean, we first started dating in COVID, so that was a little tough with scheduling, seeing each other with all the testing, different regulations from different teams,” Chris said.

Still, they found ways to make it work. Chris often attended Maddie’s soccer games whenever his schedule allowed, while Maddie had fewer opportunities to watch him play because of her own practices and competitions.

“Chris actually got to see me play a lot more than I got to see him play,” Maddie said.

Even when they could only squeeze in an hour together between classes, those small windows of time became meaningful.

“When you’re in college, you’re so close together,” Chris said. “So even if you can only see each other, you know, for like an hour or two, it’s way easier, I feel, than the real world.”

Their shared experience as athletes also gave them an understanding that others may not appreciate. They knew what it meant to be busy, exhausted, and completely committed to something bigger than themselves.

“We definitely understood the severity of each other’s schedules,” Chris explained. “We didn’t get mad at each other when we didn’t get a response for like seven hours; we knew the other person was busy doing something.”

That understanding helped them navigate college life without letting demanding schedules get in the way.

Looking back, their favorite memories weren’t necessarily the biggest moments, but the little ones: seeing each other after games, celebrating championships together, stopping by after class, or simply taking a spare 45 minutes to talk.

For Maddie, seeing Chris after games and sharing championship celebrations made her accomplishments even more special. Chris, meanwhile, appreciated the simple opportunities to spend time together.

“Just kind of the little moments are what I think about,” Chris said.

Their favorite places around State College became part of their story, too.

The Naked Egg was a favorite breakfast spot, while local bars and restaurants offered opportunities to unwind when their schedules finally aligned. They also enjoyed a date night out to GiGi’s Southern Table.

When graduation finally arrived, it brought about a new challenge: learning how to build a future together while pursuing separate professional dreams.

After Penn State, Maddie moved to Beaverton, Oregon, to begin working at Nike. Chris continued pursuing his football career and eventually joined the Seattle Seahawks. Their careers took them in different directions, leaving them to navigate approximately two and a half years of long-distance.

For Maddie, leaving competitive soccer was an enormous adjustment.

“I definitely struggled in leaving sports, just navigating all of my friends who were still playing, and then obviously Chris playing at the highest level,” she said.

At the same time, she was learning to establish herself professionally in a new city. Chris was navigating the uncertainty of pursuing an NFL career, traveling around the country for training and working toward his next opportunity.

The transition was not always easy.

“It’s tough. It’s not for the faint of heart,” he said of long-distance.

Chris recalled the challenges of traveling between locations while Maddie settled into her new job and lived independently.

“There were some moments where we were both like, ‘Is this gonna work?’” Chris said.

Even visits could feel unexpectedly difficult after long stretches apart. Chris described one reunion when the two struggled to reconnect in person.

“It was like, ‘This is weird. Like, what? What? Are we okay?’” he recalled.

Maddie remembered the same experience, but believed the challenges ultimately strengthened their relationship.

“I knew, though, like, if we could make it through a year, that we were gonna get married,” Maddie said. “I just had a feeling about it.”

Their experience taught them the importance of patience and communication.

“You have to give each other a lot of grace,” Maddie explained. “I think you need to have phenomenal communication skills, which we learned about, and I think you need to have a good foundation because otherwise we would have crumbled.”

Their commitment to one another also meant supporting each other’s ambitions, even when those ambitions required difficult decisions.

“I think it goes into being supportive of each other’s goals and what they want,” Maddie said.

Eventually, Maddie found a way to reconnect with soccer through her work with the ECNL, a major youth soccer league in the United States.

Chris continued building his professional football career, and the two learned to appreciate the lives they were creating individually as well as the future they were building together.

When the time came, Chris’s proposal was carefully planned, although Maddie had already begun to suspect an engagement was coming.

He asked her father for permission and accidentally left his phone’s location visible, giving her a clue something was happening. She just didn’t know when.

Chris chose the Fourth of July, a holiday that already held special meaning for Maddie and her family. Each year, her family gathered at her grandparents’ house on Lake Michigan for a large celebration.

Chris initially told Maddie he couldn’t attend. Instead, he secretly traveled from Columbus, Ohio, to surprise her.

The plan involved the familiar “Marry Me” letters, a photographer hiding nearby, and the hope that Maddie would arrive at the right moment.

There was just one problem: Maddie’s friends were taking longer than expected to bring her down to the beach.

“I planned to be out there for like 15 minutes,” Chris recalled. “I ended up being out there for like an hour and a half.”

In the summer heat, with temperatures reaching approximately 95 degrees, Chris waited for Maddie to arrive. Meanwhile, Maddie was becoming frustrated because her friends seemed determined to go out instead of helping prepare for the family’s large holiday gathering.

“I was like, ‘Guys, like, what do you mean? You knew the deal,’” she recalled, laughing about the situation.

Eventually, her mother encouraged her to go with her friends before returning to help set up. What Maddie thought was an ordinary outing became one of the most memorable days of her life.

When she finally made her way down to the beach, Chris was waiting. He told her he wanted to be with her forever, and she said yes.

“I don’t remember what I said, but she said yes,” Chris joked. “So that’s all that matters.”

For Maddie, the moment was unforgettable.

“It was awesome. It was the best day ever,” she said.

The surprise continued when they returned to her grandparents’ house to find their families and friends gathered to celebrate. The proposal turned into an engagement celebration, no separate party needed.

Less than a year later, on June 28, Maddie and Chris were married.

Marriage brought another transition as Maddie eventually moved from Oregon to be with Chris. She worked remotely so that she could maintain her professional career while also supporting his life in the NFL.

Now living together, they had to learn how to balance individual responsibilities within a cohesive relationship.

Chris’s football season often involves long days and limited time off, while the offseason gives him considerably more flexibility. Maddie’s work schedule, by contrast, stays more consistent year-round.

“We just have to be conscious and make sure that we spend some personal time with each other when we can,” Chris said.

The couple has learned that being supportive partners sometimes means adjusting expectations and recognizing when their schedules will not align.

That partnership became especially important during Chris’s Super Bowl-winning season. As newlyweds, they were still figuring out the rhythm of their first year as husband and wife.

Alongside those adjustments came the excitement and demands of a successful NFL season.

For Maddie, supporting Chris during the Super Bowl meant much more than attending the game. She helped coordinate travel, hotel arrangements, tickets, and events for both families, taking much of the logistical pressure off his shoulders.

“I try to protect Chris’s peace as much as I can,” Maddie said, describing the challenge of organizing the experience for their families.

Ultimately, watching the Seahawks win was emotional. Maddie knew firsthand how much work and sacrifice went into reaching that moment.

“Knowing what goes into winning something like that is unbelievable,” she said. “And watching them do that, I just felt so lucky and so blessed to be along for his journey.”

For Chris, having Maddie there to share the season’s highs and lows meant everything.

“It meant the world to have her there to see all the ups and downs of the season, to be with me,” Chris said.

He also credited her with helping manage the complicated logistics surrounding the Super Bowl.

Today, Maddie and Chris learned that success looks different at different stages of life.

For Chris, winning remains an important part of his professional identity. But he also recognizes the value of finding happiness and joy in everyday life, regardless of a game’s outcome.

“Being happy and joyful every day, there is some aspect to that that is successful,” Chris explained. “No matter if we just won or lost, I was still happy and joyful to be with my teammates and to come home to Maddie.”

As for Maddie, success has become less about athletic achievements and more about the relationships she builds, the work she finds meaningful, and the kind of wife, daughter, and friend she strives to be.

“I think reframing my mindset into not all of your worth is in sport,” she said.

She now values showing up for the people in her life and becoming the best version of herself.

“I just try to be the best wife, daughter, and friend,” she said, laughing.

Their journey together has not unfolded quite as either of them imagined.

Chris once considered transferring from Penn State after struggling to find playing time, and his path to the NFL was far from guaranteed. Maddie, too, could not have predicted exactly where her career would take her after college soccer.

“Absolutely not,” Chris said when asked whether he had ever imagined ending up where he is today.

Maddie agreed that neither of them could have planned out their current lives.

“I think it’s a testament to being where your feet are and living in the moment,” she said. “Because I think we couldn’t have planned this.”

From an unassuming meeting at the Morgan Academic Center to years of friendship, long-distance challenges, a surprise beach proposal, and a Super Bowl celebration, Maddie and Chris’s relationship has grown through every new chapter.

Their story reminds us that love doesn’t require two people to follow the same path. Sometimes, it simply requires believing in each other, making room for one another’s dreams, and appreciating the small moments along the way.

As Maddie reflected on their journey, she recognized that the decisions they made along the way helped them get to where they are today.

“I think all of our choices were made for a reason, and I think it’s gotten us here, and I think we have so many more places to go,” she said.
