[Photo Story] Penn State vs. Purdue

Penn State football finally returned to Beaver Stadium after a bye week and came back swinging.

The Nittany Lions beat Purdue 31-17 on Saturday to secure their first Big Ten win of the season. After losing wide receivers Chase Sowell and Koby Howard, the blue and white leaned on the run game, totaling 269 yards on 51 carries. The Nittany Lions now sit at 4-4.

Of course, our photographers were on the scene to capture the win, so let’s take a look.

The Nittany Lions received a warm welcome after a bye week.

With pads on, the players took the field to warm up.

For Halloween, the fans dressed up for the occasion.

The defense went to work on the Boilermakers to set up the offense for its first possession. The Nittany Lions started on their own 4-yard line after a fair catch by Zay Robinson.

After a series of plays, the offense reached 4th-and-7 from the Purdue 20. Penn State’s fake field goal to Benjamin Brahmer piut it across the line to gain for a first down.

Rocco Becht connected with an open Andrew Rappleyea, who took it into the end zone. After a successful extra point, Penn State gained the upper hand with 5:13 left in the first quarter.

Purdue wasted no time in responding to Penn State’s touchdown. The Nittany Lions fought back with Cam Wallace taking the ball for 48 yards. Becht then found Rappleyea near the sideline for a 12-yard gain.

Becht just barely made it over the pylon for a touchdown. Barker’s extra point made it 14-7.

After some back-and-forth and a touchdown from both sides, the first half wrapped up 21-14, with Penn State still in the lead.

The second half opened up with a failed 55-yard field goal by Penn State. The Nittany Lions regained possession after a Jamison Patton interception. Barker’s field goal put the Nittany Lions up 24-14 to end the third quarter.

The Boilermakers couldn’t make anything of their next possession, giving the Nittany Lions the ball back.

After multiple rushes down the field, including a 26-yard run by Wallace, Penn State got inside the 5-yard line. The blue and white moved to 2nd-and-goal on the 1-yard line, and Wallace forced it in to make it 31-14.

With six minutes left, Purdue kicked a field goal to make it 31-17.

Penn State ran down the clock, giving Purdue 2:49 to make something happen. Jeremiah Cooper picked off Ryan Browne’s desperate throw downfield to close out the game and give Penn State the 31-17 win.

Penn State’s defeat of Purdue secured its first Big Ten win of the season, hopefully putting some well-needed mojo back into the team.

The Nittany Lions are on the road again to take on the Washington Huskies on the West Coast. The matchup is slated for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff on FS1.
